Lyle poked an electric prod at the male. He dodged it with seemingly little effort. Lyle let him. After all, the male was in a cage being transported from Chicago to Blue Cove, Delaware. Lyle had ordered him stripped naked, even of his cheap jewelry. Beasts neither need nor deserve baubles.

He had been looking forward to playing, torturing and experimenting with his new toy when the van upended.

Suddenly there were sirens, federal agents and Lyle was arrested. The federal government would turn many a blind eye on the Centre’s work, but the Centre wasn’t supposed to get caught.

Parker, Eliot and Hardison were enjoying playing FBI agents that ‘arrested’ the Centre’s men that had destroyed the client’s life. Nathan Ford knew that Lyle would be out in hours, but that was part of the plan.

The broken, bare body in the cage was not. Like a rabid animal.

Nathan had thought that the descriptor ‘evil’ had been an exaggeration. Eliot and the sweepers scuffled. By the time Eliot won and Nate turned back to the victim, the cage door was opened and the body gone.

Nate’s only clue to his identity was a bead bracelet confiscated from Lyle.

Eliot caught a glimpse of the cape and frowned. This was Chicago, not Metropolis or Central City. There shouldn’t be any superheroes around. Eliot backed away from the Centre team. He trusted Hardison to scream like a girl if they made a move.

Where was he? Who was he? Why was… the Batman appeared out of the shadows for a moment, lifted something off of Nate and, before Eliot could yell, was gone.

“What did he take?” Eliot demanded of Nate.

Nate patted his pockets. “The victim’s bracelet. Not that we could have used it. We have a conspiracy to steal.”

Bruce Wayne walked into my office without knocking, not for the first time. I was glad he used the door. Marcone had been making contacts in Gotham, messing up his plans. Plans I inadvertently discovered with one ill-advised soul gaze. Wayne hadn’t known that people like me existed, though I’m sure that the Great Detective now knew more about my kind than I did.

He set a wooden bracelet on my table. “It’s occult, Tibetan and powerful. You need to find its owner.” Then he was gone. You’d think that he was cutting though the NeverNever with his exits.

I took the bracelet to the library. I don’t own Tibetan reference books. The librarian Oogled a translation on the computer while I stood far away. The translation surprised me. These beads helped a lycanthrope control the wild side. I didn’t know such a spell existed.

A man in a bright, red uniform was waiting for me at my door. I knew who he was and had even replicated him for Little Chicago. He smiled politely. “Pardon me, I believe you have recently gained possession of a trinket that belongs to a friend of mine.”

I gave him the bracelet.

Benton Fraser rowed the tiny dingy to the island where the ley lines converged. Neither Ray would understand this errand. The werewolf had swum here to protect the locals. Benton had tracked the binding through the city, because he understood its importance. He was honored that Daniel had assigned the task to him.

There he was.

The wounds had mostly healed. The naked body was that of a human’s but the mind was still wild.

Benton placed the bracelet on the soft grass and stepped away. He dug in his pack for clothes and food. Daniel would need those soon.
