“This is not good,” Peter said.
“What’s not good?” Neal asked.
Peter looked up and realized that he must have inadvertently spoken out loud. “Sorry, just a report.”
“It’s got you talking.”
“Nathan Ford has been arrested for robbery, money laundering, confidence games and extortion.”
“Nathan Ford?” It took a minute for Neal to connect the name. “Wait? IYS Nathan Ford? That Nathan Ford?”
“Yes. That Nathan Ford.”
“He caught me in Madrid.”
“He’s caught everyone.”
“And now he’s a thief.”
“He’s running a crew.”
“Anyone I know in the crew?” Neal couldn’t hide his glee at the change in Ford’s career plans.
“Sophie Deveraux, Alec Hardison, Eliot Spencer and Parker.”
Neal’s jaw dropped. “All run by Ford?”
“Yes.”
“That’s fun. Like break out the popcorn and sit on the sidelines fun.”
Peter glared. “No, it’s not. He has worked with the FBI. He knows a lot about everything. He better not come to my city.”
Neal leaned back in his chair. “Next to you, Nathan Ford is the last person I would have expected to turn to a life of crime.” He thought about it. “Though with IYS basically killing his son, I’m not surprised. I guess everyone’s got their breaking point.”
“His son died?”
“Yeah.”
Peter had a moment of silence to mourn the tragedy. He remembered how much love had been in Nathan’s voice when he spoke of his son. “I’m sorry to hear that.”
“Hey, Peter.”
“What?”
“If anything ever happens to Elle, Mozzy and I would be honored to be on your crew.”
Peter blinked and stared at Neal. He wanted to deny the idea. He wanted to say that he would never be a thief. That he would never cross that line to get revenge.
Instead, he said, “Nothing’s going to happen to Elle.”
