“Burke?”

Peter looked up and when he recognized an old acquaintance/friend, he smiled. “Marshal Carter, it’s been a while. What brings you to the Big Apple?”

“You put out the word for a better tracking anklet.”

Peter brightened. “What do the Marshals have up their sleeves that hasn’t gotten to the FBI yet?”

“Ahh, yeah,” Jack Carter hedged. “About that, I’m not with the Marshals anymore.”

“Really? What happened?”

“That’s a long story.” Carter moved into the office and Peter noticed that he had a flat square box under each arm, each one with a manual. “But in the process, I made new, really smart friends.” He placed the first box on Peter’s desk. “Our wildlife retrievalist suped up his normal one. He was disappointed to hear that you couldn’t punch a hole on the actual fugitive, so this is apparently the next best thing, according to him. The key is in the box with the anklet, it has both a mechanical and computer part to it, kinda like the old one. If you don’t have the key, you would need a chainsaw to get it off, a regular knife or pair of scissors won’t work.”

Peter picked up the box and opened it up. It was heavier, made of metal not plastic. “It looks like it would withstand wear and tear on a lion.”

“Probably did,” Carter grinned. He handed Peter the other flat box. “This one is made higher tech and it doesn’t come with a key, it comes with a complete remote control. Don’t worry about hackers, we had two different ones try and after the first found some loophole, the second one couldn’t get in at all.”

“Carter,” Peter shook his head. “I didn’t even save your life. I just gave you a paper trail so that you could catch your killer. And you give me two custom-made, tracking anklets?”

“Your help was timely and you didn’t blow me off even though I was from a different agency. Actually, I only asked our wildlife retrievalist. I figured that he would have something applicable laying around. But my best friend was feeling guilty and heard that I called in a favor with Taggert, so you get two. They promised that the directions are dummy proof and I actually could do everything, but if you have any problems with either one, I put my number on the front cover of the books.”

Peter checked that the phone number was there as promised. “Thanks, Carter. This will help. You staying in town long?”

“No,” he waved to a woman in the bullpen that Diane and Neal were flirting with, both unsuccessfully. “We were delivering people and things to the East Coast. We gotta get back to DC, ‘cause we’re escorting someone back home.”

“Thank you, again. And if you’re ever in New York for a longer period of time, look me up. My wife and I would love to have you over for dinner.”

“Well, my daughter just got accepted to Harvard Medical, so I’ll be coming this way.”

“Elle and I look forward to having you, and your daughter if she can make it.” Peter rose and held out a hand. The two shook.

“We’ll see what happens.” Then Carter turned on his heel and walked out of his office.

“Coming, Jo?” he called as he walked by his partner.

“Coming.”

Just that fast, Carter had come and gone.
