Chapter 7
The pizza had been consumed and Sarah had fallen asleep on the couch watching a Dora the Explorer marathon that was on the television. Puck and Kurt were sitting in the kitchen drinking coffee.
“She is the sweetest girl I have ever met.” Kurt said breaking the awkward silence that had filled the air after Sarah had fallen asleep.
“She’s all I have. We take care of each other, mom works night shifts so she sleeps during the day and we don’t see much of her, we’re close.” Puck explained over his coffee.
“You’re lucky; I always wished I’d had a sibling growing up. Now I have Finn, who seems to hate me now. Guess I don’t deserve anything less for being an idiot.” Kurt sighed and closed his eyes.
“I heard what happened between the two of you Kurt. Finn fucked up, I hate to say it but he never dissuaded you. He just bottled it all up inside and waited until he snapped. He could have spoken up about being uncomfortable sharing a room with you but he didn’t, he waited until he could hurt you the most.” Puck said placing a gentle hand on Kurt’s trembling left hand. “He had no right to say to you what he did.”
“Thanks Noah. You’re the first person who’s said anything in support of me besides my dad, Carole understood why my dad kicked Finn out but she still sided with her son...not that I can blame her but even Mercedes gave me dirty looks after it happened, she said something about how I shouldn’t have forced myself on him. All I did was change my room so that it might have seemed homier; I put up a privacy partition so that the two sides of the room were separated so he might not feel as uncomfortable. I haven’t been able to go back down there since then.” Kurt was still unable to look up from the cup in his hands.
“Then they were wrong Kurt. You are a good guy...maybe a little different from the other guys around here but there’s nothing wrong with that. It’ll probably be what gets you out of this dead-end town.” Puck said lacing his fingers with Kurt’s.
“Would you mind...I mean could you...would you help me sort out some stuff down there?” Kurt asked nervously. “I love my old room but it just isn’t the same as the basement.”
“Of course I will.” Puck replied.
They stood up and made their way to the basement door. Kurt stood in front of it for a moment steeling his self for going back into the room that ruined everything, taking a deep breath he opened the door and made his way down the stairs. When he reached the bottom he flicked on the lights and stared in disgust at the decorations he had put up. He moved over to the couch and began pulling the pillows and blankets off it returning it to its plain white state. Puck began to pull down the privacy partition carefully and folding it as it came down. They worked mostly in silence so that Puck could listen for Sarah in case she woke up. Kurt was quietly humming to himself as he worked on returning his basement to it’s simple yet elegant white modern style.
“Hey Kurt, do you think your dad would flip if we had a bit of a party here?” Puck asked as they were finishing up.
“Why would i have a party?” Kurt asked completely confused.
“I just thought we could invite the glee kids over. As far as I know Sam hasn’t had a welcoming party yet so I thought it might be fun. Get us together for singstar or something like that.” Puck explained.
“I’ll have to call and ask him. but do you really think anyone can stomach that much Rachel?” Kurt asked trying to keep the mood light.
“when we get to nationals this someone is gonna get stuck sharing a room with her aren’t they? This’ll be a good chance to find out who can handle it the best.” Puck explained rationally.
“Okay, I’m gonna go call my grandparents place and see if he’s up.” Kurt headed upstairs to make his phone call as I carried the box full of decorations up the stairs as Kurt wanted them thrown away. His basement was finally returned to its old white state and Sarah was still asleep on the couch so after he had sat the box down in the hallway he made his way over to the couch to wake Sarah so she wasn’t up all night.
“Hey munchkin, wakey wakey.” Noah said shaking Sarah’s shoulder gently.
“Noah?” She asked sleepily.
“Hey Munchkin it’s time to get up otherwise you’ll be up all night.”
“Noah, why was Kurt sad when you came to pick me up?” Sarah asked cuddling into Puck’s side.
“Because he gets picked on a lot at school, I’m trying to help him but most of this is my fault anyways so I don’t completely know how to help.” Puck explained.
“Why did you pick on him Noah?” Sarah asked confused why her brother would be mean to anyone.
“I think it was because I was jealous of him. He’s never been afraid to be who he is, even when we bullied him because he was different he never changed who he was. The only time he has ever changed who he is was to try and make his dad happy but his dad only wanted him to be true to himself.” Puck explained as best as he could.
What neither of them realised was that Kurt was standing in the doorway and had heard everything Noah had said.
His father had been up and was fine with Kurt having the Glee kids over as long as their parents were fine with it. He was about to inform Puck of this but heard Sarah ask why he was sad and wanted to hear Puck’s explanation. He was shocked to hear that Puck was blaming himself for what was going on.
Kurt stepped back out into the hallway and started texting the glee club asking them if they wanted to come over tonight for a bit of a glee party. They had all gotten each other’s number before regional’s last year so he didn’t have to hunt around for numbers. Then he headed back down to his basement. It was time for a full life make over and it started with his room. He still loved the colour scheme but he needed to sort out the crap all over the vanity. He began sorting out the products that he doesn’t use or rarely uses to be put away in the back of his wardrobe, when that was sorted out he didn’t have all that many products left. Then he packed away the stuff he wasn’t going to be using and put it in the back of his closet and pulling out his mothers old chest. She had left it to him when she died because she said it was their special treasure chest with compartment only they knew about. When he opened the combination lock and looked inside admiring the treasures he kept in there. But the room needed something before he put them one the walls so he closed and locked the chest and headed upstairs where he found Puck helping his sister to wash up.
“Hey guys do you feel up to a quick trip to the mall?” Kurt asked a huge smile plastered on his face.
“Can we Noah?” Sarah asked just as happily as Kurt had.
“As long as we are taking your car Kurt, I don’t have enough gas to get us there and back.” Puck replied smiling back at Kurt.
“That was the plan.” Kurt replied.
They all pulled their shoes on and jumped into Kurt’s car, once everyone was safely buckled in they headed off.
