I never dare thought of re-watching a Filipino movie on the big screen; I never write anything about them on my blog; I never ever recommended one to my colleagues - just this one movie. There are plenty of things that I hate about a Filipino movie; script writing being one of them. I don’t enjoy cheesy, obvious and nonsense dialogues. Most that I’ve seen had the dialogue dragged the entire movie for fear of missing an “important poignant transition or revelation.” Not this movie though.
Miss You Like Crazy stars John Lloyd Cruz as Alan Alvarez and Bea Alonzo as Mia Samonte. Alan is normal working guy with a boring life and an OC girlfriend (played by Maricar Reyes). Mia is miserable girl who blames her dad for ruining their lives. They met in a Pasig River Ferry (which I didn’t know exist before this movie) and got connected by her “messages in stones.” Their story was just a plain boy meets girl; boy is already in a relationship; girl falls in love and the likes. But what stands out in the movie is the scriptwriting.
Less is more. The lesser the dialogue, the more poignant the story translates to its audience. A simple close up on their hands intertwined; I had a smile on my face. A simple hug tells a lot of pain, thankfulness and relief. I like it better when scenes were left for me to think about. It made me feel the movie more.
I also liked how John Lloyd portrayed Alan. Confused, in love, tied up to his comfort zone. Though he chose to break free from the ennui too late but he still waited until fate can bring them back to each other again.; He can make his audience feel his longing and his guilt. His eyes speaks, I listened.
Bea's good with the dramatic scenes; though I think she falls short in comedic timing. Her prettiness overpowers the scene. Good? Maybe, but not enough for me.
The supporting cast was also deserved high praises. Bembol Roco didn't have to memorize any dialogue but his phonecall scene with Bea brought me to tears.
Overall, I loved it and I would recommend you guys to watch it. Typical love story? I guess 1 out of 4 of your friends had experienced it before. But hey, it's good to cry when you know that your 170 pesos is worth it.
