"me hungry"

"they" sometimes refer to a house as a money pit. There have been lots of movies on the topic, and it really is true. A house is a great big mouth and it eats whatever resources it can. Like the furby that says "me hungry!". This time it was a plumbing nightmare. I was cleaning the basement, after the carpenters and painters finished with installing shelves and wine racks (Chris- I can't wait to show you). The door to the outside was open- yes, it works now- and the fans on for ventillating the fumes from the sealer the painters had put on the raw wood. suddenly, I saw a puddle forming just at the doorway. No, it wasn't raining, no broken pipe obvious- the water was coming from above. Hmmm. Oh dear- it was the kitchen sink up there. I went upstairs, opened the cabinet under the sink, and my heart sank. Greasy, nasty water, sitting in the pans stored in there, and the floor of the cabinet rather soft and mushy. Is that a word? How long had this been going on? Long enough to be smelly when I opened the cabinet, obviously. I started feeling around pipes, and sure enough, the metal "trap" under the main sink drain had a hole in it, and when pressed gently, crumbled! The entire U was rusted/rotted out. Well damn. And it was well after five in the afternoon, Friday of Labor Day weekend. It's all dealt with now, but what a way to start the weekend. I wonder what will be the next to go?
