World Cup Sleep Deprivation Diary - Day 18

Jun 27, 2006 17:13

In case there is any doubt, my previous post, at 2:52 this morning, was in response to Australia's loss to Italy in the World Cup.

Australia absolutely dominated the match, due in no small part to Italy's tactics to defend defend defend once they were reduced to 10 men. Some people might say that Australia didn't deserve to win if they couldn't convert the massive advantage in possession into goals. Screw them I say. I really, really, really, really hope Italy don't win the Cup.

I intended to miss Switzerland v Ukraine (it was a rather dull encounter anyway or so I've read), but when I woke up this morning and turned on the radio, I found out it had just gone to penalties. I switched on the tele just before the first penalty was taken. I therefore count that as having watched part of the match. And it's gotta suck for the Swiss bowing out of the World Cup without conceding a goal.

On a side issue, as an observer who constantly bemoans the plethora of overacting and diving by players, the first half of ITA v AUS was a pleasant change. No Argentinian-like shenanigans to be seen. Very little falling over at the slightest touch, and when players did hit the turf, they were straight back up - no exaggerated rolling around clutching shins at all. If only all football matches were like that.
