[Infodump] The Kyoshi Warriors

Aug 02, 2011 07:15

The purpose of the Kyoshi Warriors, originally, was to protect Kyoshi Island from unwanted invaders, using the art of stealth and surprise to take initiative and ambush potential enemies before a real fight can start. The stealth is the focus of their technique, since the group is typically comprised of teenage girls with no powers or super strength, and overpowering anyone with brute force is less likely.

For more information, HERE is a video that showcases everything Avatar shows about the Kyoshi Warriors- uniform, fighting style, technique, etc. (This is assuming Veoh lets the video stay up, since NOWHERE ELSE WILL stupid copyright.)

Suki specializes in several things, as the leader of the Warriors, and therefore she'll be teaching her students (and fellow Warriors, when they're ready) how to utilize the following in battle:
  • stealth and sneak attacks
  • combat fans
  • folding shields
  • katanas
  • acrobatics
  • hand-to-hand fighting
Anyone who already has a weapon in which they specialize is, of course, free to continue using that weapon rather than switching to the fan/katana combination, but Suki will strongly encourage learning how to use the fans, since they're a big part of the Kyoshi technique. It helps the warriors learn unity and chemistry with the team, as well as utilizing the strength of one's opponent to work against them, and Suki can't give them much guidance in the way of learning how to use other weapons. Unless they're already an expert in that weapon, she'd tell them they should look into finding another teacher for that, since Luceti has a lot of weapon specialists anyway.

Since there are other organizations in Luceti, she's tried to work around the schedules of the other groups. Unless there are protests to this, the chosen time for meetings/official practice is every Sunday morning. Between meetings, Suki will encourage at least an hour or two of training every day, to practice whatever she taught them the week before. These meetings run for at least two hours. They take place in the Battle Dome to allow for the change in scenario- for example, a dojo for basic techniques, or a location with practice bars and rings for acrobatics, stuff like that. If for whatever reason the Battle Dome is full or unavailable, she'll move the practice outside or to the barracks.

Meetings will consist of the following:
  • 30 minutes where she checks over the progress of everyone from the previous week's technique; if anyone needs additional instruction or advice, she'll give it then.
  • One hour where she teaches them new stuff; a couple of hand-to-hand moves, some sort of flip, jump, or balance technique, etc.
  • 30 minutes for general practice of old and new and, once they've got a fair bit of moves under their belts, sparring sessions. She'll pit the girls against one another, either randomized or matched according to talent and level of progression, to see how they do in actual combat.

After every practice, Suki will stick around whatever location they practiced in for about an hour in case anyone needs extra help/advice or has questions for her, or they just want a little one-on-one time. Also, anyone who needs additional instruction or finds themselves falling behind can either ask her for help or wait until she brings it up - because she will, no doubt, if it's noticable. Anyone in need of that little extra tutelage can just schedule another day with her; she's pretty free with her time, unless she's otherwise occupied with her housemates, so she'd be happy to coach whoever needs it.

Every other month, she'll run a special practice session of actual combat taking place in the Battle Dome, where the girls can learn how to utilize their skills in real-time and against real foes without it being a life or death situation. During those practices she spends half the time leading the group through the scenario and half in the observation deck, watching to see how they handle themselves as a group and on their own. Afterwards she gives some critique and advice on how they can improve for next time.

Additionally, once the uniforms are complete and things start getting serious, members of the Kyoshi Warriors will be required to wear the full ensemble to every practice.
