In the Company of Vampires by Katie MacAlister
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

There was definitely a need to have read the previous Ben/Fran books (YA Dark Ones novels) before reading this one. Even having read them, it had been several years and it was difficult to recall some things.

That said, it was good to get back to that story and those characters. The Goth Faire is an interesting setting, but it was used a lot less than in the previous books. Before it seemed almost as if it were a character all on its own, and now it was mostly where they happened to be sleeping.

All in all, it was what I have come to expect from Katie MacAlister. Maybe just a little diluted this time. One thing that wasn't 'less' was the laughter it provided, and that's always welcome.

Red Riding Hood by Sarah Blakley-Cartwright
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A case of the movie coming before the book. This book was written from the screenplay for the movie of the same title. I've heard mixed reviews of the movie so far--leaning a little more to the bad--but the book was pretty darn good.

I am in love with the design of the book itself. The cover, the chapter division, just everything was put together perfectly. It's just so pretty. haha.

The story itself was a very interesting take on the traditional story and kept you guessing. The only problem I had with the whole book was that it ended with much left undiscovered.

I'd still like to watch the movie to see for myself how it was translated into film, but I might wait for it to be a rental.
