Giving Thanks (fwd-dated to Thursday -gathering)

Nov 25, 2014 19:43

This wasn't the life Cullen ever foresaw for himself. Of course, there was no way to predict he'd find himself in the future, working in a "drag" bar with an adopted kind of family (and a special someone he might or might not have been courting...). With the week off, he took it upon himself to make sure those near him had a meal to celebrate ( Read more... )

Carl had helped get things ready! He wasn't completely useless (just a bit petulant sometimes... more of the time)!

He currently had his little sister hoisted up in his arms, bouncing her on his hip and grinning like an idiot. He was still so happy that she was here and alive. Grabbing a rattle from the pile of toys Daryl and Carol had bought for the girl, he shook it in front of her and she reached out for it with stubby little hands giggling as she did.

He had a lot to be thankful for.

He was good with the baby. Cullen would readily acknowledge that. He was pulling the turkey out of the oven when he asked, "mind finishin' settin' the table?"

Distractedly Carl glanced up, having to take a second for the words to catch up to him and he glanced at the table. Right, there was still more to do, wasn't there?

Michonne was currently in the living room, getting in some last minute cleaning in, vacuum cleaning. So strange how much their lives had changed.

"Sure." he agreed after a very long pause. Carl reluctantly put Judith back in her playpen in order to get the plates.

Well, huh. For a moment, Cullen stood there, stunned, then scooted out of the way to let the boy have access to the cabinets. More things to give thanks for.

He wasn't always a petulant little shit. Especially when he'd been distractedly happy playing with Judith. Carl set the table in relative silence, thinking about what it might be like if his father were here too.

"Thanks," Cullen said again when Carl was done. "Guess the others'll be here soon."

[ooc: oh! yeah, I think she would have. :) ]

"Yeah." Carl agreed, smiling as he looked at everything that was ready to go. "It all smells really good." And he'd probably have three plates full. Growing boy and everything.

[ooc: here!]

"Guess we did all right," Cullen agreed, a hint of fondess there if someone were to go searching for it. "There's cranberry sauce to put in a bowl if you want."

"Yes, I want." Carl agreed and he didn't even kick up a fuss for being asked to do it. Chock it up to happy holiday feeling. "I didn't even like cranberry's before..." the walkers, "But now I want it all."

Cullen watched as it came out of the can shaped like the can.

He shook his head at that. That didn't seem right not in the least.

And Carl had never known any different, so he set the can shaped cranberry on it's side on a plate to take to the table. Just like his grandma used to make!

"They still make that shit?" Daryl asked, seeing it. He had to smile. They had that shit all the time when he was growing up. It seemed like home, fucked up as that might be.

"I guess so." Carl agreed, grinning as the plate was set at the table. "I found a can of it once when were went on a patrol run."

He'd devoured it. Not like he'd done with the pudding but it had been good.

"Made a lotta food," Daryl noted, bouncing Judith on his hip. "This all your idea?"

"Mostly Cullen's but partly me." he'd brought up that Thanksgiving was coming around at least. "I like seeing everyone together."

He missed it and liked it when it happened.

"Yeah, well," And Daryl still wasn't too good at compliments. "You did good." And he meant it, too. This kind of thing was good. If Rick was here, it'd be better, but this was good.
