Giving Thanks (fwd-dated to Thursday -gathering)

This wasn't the life Cullen ever foresaw for himself. Of course, there was no way to predict he'd find himself in the future, working in a "drag" bar with an adopted kind of family (and a special someone he might or might not have been courting...). With the week off, he took it upon himself to make sure those near him had a meal to celebrate ( Read more... )

Carl had helped get things ready! He wasn't completely useless (just a bit petulant sometimes... more of the time)!

He currently had his little sister hoisted up in his arms, bouncing her on his hip and grinning like an idiot. He was still so happy that she was here and alive. Grabbing a rattle from the pile of toys Daryl and Carol had bought for the girl, he shook it in front of her and she reached out for it with stubby little hands giggling as she did.

He had a lot to be thankful for.

He was good with the baby. Cullen would readily acknowledge that. He was pulling the turkey out of the oven when he asked, "mind finishin' settin' the table?"

Distractedly Carl glanced up, having to take a second for the words to catch up to him and he glanced at the table. Right, there was still more to do, wasn't there?

Michonne was currently in the living room, getting in some last minute cleaning in, vacuum cleaning. So strange how much their lives had changed.

"Sure." he agreed after a very long pause. Carl reluctantly put Judith back in her playpen in order to get the plates.

Well, huh. For a moment, Cullen stood there, stunned, then scooted out of the way to let the boy have access to the cabinets. More things to give thanks for.

Carol had made pie. God, how long had it been since she'd made a damn pie? Two pies? One pumpkin and the other pecan. She set them on the designated table and glanced around the room.

This was... it still seemed so surreal. She'd been so sure that she was burned up, not even a semblance of the person she'd wanted to be-- but there were moments here were she thought that maybe she could be the person again. If only she didn't have the ever present weight of her past and the things she'd done to weigh on her.

Still though, she smiled, despite those thoughts that lay underneath.

"You all right?" Daryl asked, careful of her, keeping close to her elbow. The pies smelled good when she was cooking them, taking over his small kitchen that hadn't seen nearly that kind of use before she'd come.

"Yeah." she shook off the concern and shook off her thoughts, "Just--" Carol looked around them, "Thanksgiving dinner."

That was weird, right?

Not that Daryl had a good many of them before the walkers came. He shrugged a little. Food smelled good, too. "Here," he said, reaching for the pies. He'd take them and Carol could go see the baby, or whatever she wanted to do.

What did a Musketeer bring to a holiday he didn't understand?

Booze.

He figured it was a safe bet. Hence that was why he was at the door with a bottle in a strange-feeling flimsy bag given to him by the merchant, wearing, still his garb (minus, though, most of his weapons, seeing as it was a holiday).

He knocked, prepared lest someone decide they wanted to come at him for courting Michonne.

"I got it!" A young voice called from behind the door and it was sung open to reveal a teenager (who was for once not wearing his father's hat, but with neatly combed hair and button up shirt). Carl frowned when he didn't recognize the person at the door.

"Uh... hi." The 'who're you?' was evident in his tone.

Cue one equally surprised Musketeer. "Hello," he said, his accent thick, but the words recognizable. "I - " He couldn't offer booze to a boy. "I on the invitation of Michonne."

He stared at d'Artagnan, The invitation of Michonne?

He glanced back to where Michonne was just out of sight in the other room. "You are?" Carl might have been standing a bit straighter now, posturing and trying to seem taller. He was the protective sort, "What's your name?"

Elizabeth wouldn't admit it to herself but she'd felt a little homesick when the Canadian Thanksgiving holiday came and went. When Cullen invited her to have the American holiday meal with his family, the people he lived with, she'd been honored. It helped to relax that homesick knot somewhat as well and she was grateful for that.

She wasn't sure what to bring so settled on making fresh bread and rolls. Elizabeth came bearing a basket of two sour dough loaves and some rolls.

When he pulled open the door, Cullen might have been really hoping it was Elizabeth.

So he might have been nearly smiling when it was truly her. "You made it here," he said, stepping aside so she could come in. "Good to see you."

Elizabeth stepped inside and was immediately hit with the warmth of his place. There were voices and laughter, it was nice.

"Thank you. I wouldn't have missed it. You have a lovely place" She held out her basket to him with a smile. "I come bearing gifts."

"You didn't have to." But he took it anyway, pulling it closer to his nose to smell. It smelled real good. "C'mon in. We got wine and water and soda."
