In The Snow Tess laughed openly as Kyle hopped around the kitchen, a knife waving wildly in his hand.
“Watch where you’re waving that thing! You’ll poke someone’s eye out with that,” Tess squealed, ducking the towel Kyle then whipped at her with a giggle.
“I, am the king of the kitchen!” Kyle bellowed at the top of his lungs, causing another giggle to escape Tess’s lips. With another bellow, Kyle swooped Tess out from under her feet and tossed her of his shoulder, carrying her to the living room with a delicateness you’d use if carrying a porcelain doll. But when they reached the couch, Kyle tossed Tess on it before leaping on after her.
“Kyle, no!” Tess laughed, and a moment later Kyle’s deft fingers were at her sides, tickling her mercilessly. Laughter filled the normally quiet living room and Jim Valenti couldn’t help but smile when he entered it several moments later, carrying the mail in one hand and his jacket in the other.
“Ok, cut it out you two. I’ve got a big enough of a headache as it is without dealing with two squalling teens,” Jim groused teasingly. Kyle pulled away from Tess instantly and after a moment, both teens were sitting up on the couch and stifling their laughter as they tried to pat away clothes creases and messy hair. “Oh Tess, there’s a letter for you here,” Jim noted as he sifted through the bills and junk mail. Tess perked up and reached over to take the letter from Jim. She instantly recognised the heavy parchment and odd ink from her months spent with Cedric and clutched the letter close to her chest.
“Um, I’ll be in my room,” Tess mumbled, suddenly feeling nervous and uncomfortable under Kyle and Jim’s scrutiny. She hurried down the hallway to the room that had once been Kyle’s and shut the door behind her, locking it with her powers. She slumped down beside the bed, skimming over the parchment with her hands. She didn’t recognise the writing as Cedric’s soft, spindly scrawl and the ink was dark black, whereas Cedric always wrote in a bright blue ink. Tess swallowed deeply and undid the binding, unfolding the letter before her. With a deep breath, she started reading the tight writing before her.
To Ms Teresa Harding,
I am Celeste Diggory, the mother of Cedric. I am sorry to tell you that Cedric died several weeks ago. I am sorry it took so long to contact you, but I was not aware of your part in my son’s life until my husband Amos found Cedric’s diary. We send you our condolences on your loss.
Sincerely,
C. Diggory.
Tears stung Tess’s eyes as she scrunched up the parchment bitterly and threw it in the wastebasket in the corner of the room. For a moment, the room was deathly silent, before a sob tore up Tess’s throat from the pit of her stomach and a loud, resounding ‘Fuck!’ echoed through the room. Seconds later, Tess was on her feet and sweeping everything off her bed with a piercing smash.
“Fuck!” Tess screamed again and now she could hear Kyle and Jim pounding worriedly on the door, calling for her, but she couldn’t bring herself to care. She cursed again as she kicked and hit the wall behind her angrily, letting out all her rage. Her wet, salty tears were now dripping down her face and welling in her bosom, and she hated that she showed such human emotion for this boy, this boy who was only supposed to be a winter fling, but she couldn’t help but feel this way. She slid down the wall until her buttocks hit the hard floor with a painful thud and closed her eyes, wishing away this pain, this human emotion. Her last thoughts before she fell asleep against the wall was wondering if maybe Cedric would mind if he saw her again so quickly.
