Prompts: Written for 50scenes for Table #2 for prompt #2 (grave). Also written for day 12 of mini_nanowrimo where I signed up to write 250 words a day for the month of November.
Notes: This is set during the dream that Faith has during “This Year’s Girl.”
Summary: Faith knows that her dream isn’t real but that doesn’t stop it from feeling like it’s real.
Word Count: 236
Faith knows that what is happening isn’t real, she knows that it’s a nightmare, a familiar one at that, but the doesn’t slow her racing heart down. She keeps running from Buffy even though she knows that none of what is happening is real. It’s an illusion created by her mind, yet that knowledge doesn’t slow her down. Instead Faith runs faster and faster until she feels like her lungs are going to burst from the exertion. It doesn’t stop her from tumbling into her freshly dug grave, nor does it stop the rain from being icy cold as it hits her skin, nor does it slow Buffy down.
The knowledge doesn’t save her in that grave when Buffy wields Faith’s own knife against her. It doesn’t make her desperation or her determination less real. Nor does it lessen how she feels when she manages to crawl out of her grave. Faith’s triumph feels as real as everything else in the dream does. Deep down inside she may know that it’s nothing more than a horrible dream that she’s had over and over again. But all of her senses tell her that this is very real so Faith decides to ignore the internal voice telling that she’s dreamt this dream so many times. She relishes her temporary victory over Buffy and her grave, right up until she’s back in the sunlight again picnicking with the Mayor.
