Buffy still can’t get used to living in a castle no matter how long they had been living there. And a part of her longed for a small and simple house back in sunny California, however as the longest-living Slayer and the one who was responsible for turning all of the Potentials into Slayers, she had to run the Council. With a small sigh, she makes her way to the kitchen where Xander had asked her to meet him. She swears that all he ever thought about was food, he is worse than Faith after a long slaying session.

When she finally arrives, she is greeted by the scent of vanilla, chocolate and the aroma of fresh baked cookies. She can’t help but raise an eyebrow at Xander since it was eight in the morning, far too early to be baking cookies. Of course, Xander didn’t see the raised eyebrow since he was at the massive oven pulling out a sheet of cookies.

“I didn’t know that you baked Xander,” Buffy drily says once he’s finished closing the oven door.
“Buffy!” Xander says as he turns with a smile. “Willow taught me years ago when we were kids and her parents weren’t at home to make us cookies.”
“Remind me to thank Willow when I see her next,” Buffy replies as she takes a cookie.

Xander smiles in response before moving to stand next to her.

“So why the cookies?” Buffy asks.
“Why not?” Xander asks in response.
“No one just makes me cookies just because, Xander. Well my Mom used to do that but you’re not my Mom.”

Xander nervously laughs and looks away before finally responding.

“I certainly hope that you don’t look at me and see your Mom. I loved Joyce but I don’t think I want to remind you of her.”
“You don’t,” Buffy reassures him as she catches his wrist in an attempt to stop him from moving away from her. “Still what’s the occasion?”
“Can’t someone make his best friend cookies?”
“You’re going again aren’t you?” Buffy asks.
“Giles wants to send me to Australia this time.”
“Oh,” Buffy replies with a small sigh.

This time she turns away from Xander, hiding the hurt at the thought of leaving when he just got here. This time it’s Xander who catches her wrist and pulls her to him.

“It’s only for a month, Buffy. It’s not as if I’ve been sent all around the world before.”
“I know, it’s just…” Buffy starts to tell him before trailing off.

Xander turns her so that she’s facing him and kisses her. It’s a sweet and gentle kiss but it still has Buffy wanting more when it’s over.

“Look, I don’t know how to ask you this,” Xander says, “But I’ve always liked you Buffy, I am sure you know that.”
“I like you too,” Buffy reassures him.
“Not like that Buffy,” Xander says with a sigh. “Look when I come back how about you and I spend some time together?”
“I’d like that.”

Xander sighs in frustration and this time it’s Buffy who kisses him back. It’s not a gentle kiss; instead it’s a passionate one that she hopes tells him that she’s really understood what he’s trying to tell her while it also tells him that she really likes him too. When it’s over, they stand there looking at one another, Buffy’s feeling a bit breathless and Xander has this goofy smile on his face.

“You better be back in a month Xander,” Buffy tells him.
“I’ll do my best to get everything done in less than a month.”
