Notes: Set during a slightly AU Season Four.
Summary: This guarded man in front of her is a million miles away from the man that she first met.

Dean watches the video in stony silence, his arms are folded across his chest and his teeth are clenched together. Tension radiates off his body as the video plays until it’s over and he turns to face Bela.
“You don’t understand who you’re going up against, Dean.”
There’s a sharp note of hysteria to her voice.
“I think that I do.”
“No you don’t.”
He turns away from her and walks over the window to move aside the ugly polyester curtain to look outside into the empty night. She can tell that for once in his life, Dean Winchester is weighing her words and for some reason it breaks her heart. She’d never thought that she could miss the old Dean, the Dean who said anything and everything that was on his mind. This guarded man in front of her is a million miles away from the man that she first met who seemed to think that his sacrifice was worth it. Now she doesn’t know what he thinks about having sold his soul to the devil.
“I’ve been in Hell Bela, I’ve been tortured by Alistair, I think that I know exactly what they’re capable of.”
It’s now her turn to weigh her words, to try to figure out the right thing to say to him.
“I know what you’ve been through Dean but you’re not really going up against Alistair. You’re going up against Lillith and trust me when I say that she can pretty much do anything you want. That video’s proof of it.”
“So what Bela, should I just stop trying to hunt her down like the rabid bitch that she is? Should I just throw my brother to the wolves? Should I just back down and let Lucifer be released from his prison?”
She sighs because she knew that there’d be no way she could ever convince Dean Winchester of backing down from a war.
“No.”
Her voice is quiet and meek as she looks at anywhere but him.
“Fight with me Bela. I could use someone like you on my side.”
“How do you know I won’t betray you again?”
“You won’t because you don’t want to go back down there again. When we win, if you’re on my side…”
His voice trails off as he lets her fill in the blanks. Dean’s not really sure of what he can truly offer her but he’s pretty certain that she might be able to find redemption if she helps him bring down Lillith and her cohorts. When she finally nods, he sits down on the bed beside her, one arm snaking around her waist offering her comfort. He knows what she’s been through and how hard it is to resist, yet here she is beside him still human and not a demon. She’s a lot stronger than he would ever have thought she was and he knows that they’ll get through this war together.
