He loves her and hates her in equal parts and he is always powerless to resist her when ever she needs him. Alec never thinks about what she might feel towards him because he’d rather not. Instead he favours the uncertainty because it allows him to hope that one day she’ll realize what is in front of her. And hope is all that he has when it comes to Max.

When Alec first hears the news that Logan has somehow managed to find a cure Max’s virus, he feels a horrible sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach and he knows that everything will change. He’s tempted to put Seattle (and Max) as far behind him as he possibly can because he doesn’t think that he can stand to see the sight of a happy Max reunited with Logan.

However even as he packs his few meager possessions, he keeps finding reasons why he can’t leave. All of his reasons are because he knows that Max will still need him even if she can now have her happy ever after with Logan. So instead of leaving, he finds his way to Crash where he indulges in the only cure he knows of for the bad news. Alec decides that he’ll get as drunk as he possibly can before he staggers home to his old apartment where he won’t be haunted by memories of Max.

When he enters Crash, it’s as busy as it ever is, but he can remember what it looked like the first time he ever went there in search of Max. It is a different place now that Max and her friends are all fighting for the survival of Terminal City and its occupants. A part of him is relieved that there is no one there who will recognize him because he doesn’t want to hear about the perfect Max Guevara. He just wants to be left alone in a familiar place that isn’t full of ghosts of what might have been.

He sighs before he swallows down the shot glass of tequila that he had ordered. It burns as it slides down his throat and it seems to burn away the memories that he has of Max at this bar. Alec pours himself another shot from the bottle that he had order, not caring at the cost of it. All that matters is that the bitter taste is burning away the bittersweet memories of her: the first time that they met, the first time that he betrayed her, the first time that he kissed her, the first time….

Things start to blur as the bottle empties and there’s a part of him that knows as her right-hand at Terminal City, it’s stupid and irresponsible of him to be getting drunk when he should be at Terminal City running things in her absence. But for once he doesn’t care about duty or the plight of other transgenics or what Max will think when she finds out. All he wants for one brief moment is to be free from all of his captors, including Max.
