Although he would never admit it, Dean is lonely. There are basic needs in his life that aren't being met. Countless one night stands (or one-week stands) aren't enough for him. What he had with Lisa was pleasant but it never scratched the surface because he wasn't being true to himself. There's no way that he could truly ever be normal. He's just not built that way, not with being trained to be a hunter since he was five years old.

It wasn't as if they hadn't tried either. They had. When he hit the road with Sam, Lisa had tried to live the life. But they couldn't, it was too dangerous. Lisa and Ben were always going to be targets of every single demon that wanted revenge. What was worse though it wasn't a monster that hurt them, it was him. It didn't matter that he was turning into a monster himself, all that mattered to Dean was the fact that he wasn't strong enough to protect his family.

There's no way he'll try having a relationship with a "normal" woman again. There's no way he'd ever want to drag someone into his life willingly or unwillingly. So that leaves only one option: finding another hunter. A task that's akin to finding a needle in a haystack. The only other hunter that he'd ever come across that he could have seen a future with was Jo and the only things standing in their way were: Ellen, her youth and the fact that he didn't want her in that life.

The added fact that they had different lives didn't help either. The chances of finding a hunter that he was compatible with (and one that could handle his brother) were low. It wasn't that he wanted to be in a long term relationship (if someone were to ask him about it, he'd tell them off for being such a pussy.) He loved his life but he was getting tired of it, tired of the loneliness. It didn't matter that Sam was beside him because there was too much between them to ever allow for an open and honest relationship now. And talking to Bobby was like talking to his Dad sometimes. Bobby meant well but he thought that Dean should be talking to Sam, no matter the ghosts that hung between them.

The simple fact is that Dean is lonely. He's tired of having no home, of having no one to come home to. Yet the risks are far too great for him to try to change things. He'd been thrust into the role of hunter from an early age and he has no way of breaking the prison that holds him.
