The reflection that showed in the mirror wasn’t the person that had been living in the apartment for the past year and a half. The way the uniform firmly fitted against his body brought back a past he thought was just that. The past. It wasn’t supposed to resurface and grab him to drag him under again. He was supposed to be able to stay home and live the normal life of any American. Instead, he was now going back to last place he wanted to be.
But it was different this time. This time around, he was leaving something behind instead of being completely off on his own. This time, he was leaving a part of himself back home. He had a home now and he knew exactly where that was. He would be back in a few months hopefully, right back into those arms he considered the best place in that whole house.
Blinking back the bitterness of the tears he felt starting to swell in his eyes, Gabe tilted his chin up and watched as the army uniform fitted with his body. Swallowing past the lump in his throat, he prepared for the worst part of leaving. Saying goodbye. But this wouldn’t be a goodbye. It’d be a promised see you later. Just the thought of it had the weakness of tears brought to the rim of his eyes. Breathing in deeply, he closed his eyes and let them fall before lifting his hand and smearing them away.
Gabe turned away from the reflection, tired of the reminder that he was being shipped back off to war. Being deployed for who knew how long was terrible for him. He knew there would be no promise in to what he was coming back to. If there would even be someone there to come back to. Gabe couldn’t blame William is he started to give up. You could wait for someone for so long before you had to let go and let the search light go dark.
Stepping out into the hallway, he adjusted his bag over his shoulder as he walked into the kitchen. His heart fell when he saw William in the same place that he’d left him ten minutes ago. The only thing that had changed was that his head was now turned down instead of staring forward. His eyes seemed closed, but Gabe knew that he was just looking down at his hands. The tan boy stepped forward, letting his boots clink on the floor. William slowly looked up, letting his eyes work over Gabe before they finally met his face.
Seeing William look at him like this really was the last time they were going to see each other made him know they needed to set one thing straight. Or at least he needed to. Within a matter of seconds, William had lifted from the chair and Gabe had dropped his bag to the floor with a loud thump. Their arms tangled together around one another and Gabe could feel the damp heat of sadness draining from his boyfriend. He closed his eyes, lifting a hand to stroke the back of his head.
It seemed they stayed there for minutes, just holding one another. If it were his choice, he would never let go. But he had to, in order to be able to come home to William again. Slowly pulling himself loose, he watched as it hit William. This was it. Gabe was leaving. He was stepping out that door and putting his life on the line for every day people.
Gabe gently grasped each side of William’s face, looking down at him with a look of pure affection. He leaned into him, slowly pressing his lips against William’s forehead. He drew away from the tender skin ever so slowly. Just enough for him to speak; even enough for his lips to brush the skin while his mouth made the words.
“I’ll come back to you,” he whispered. “I promise you.”
He pulled away more then, biting his lower lip as he reached into his pocket and grabbed the soft velvet box from the dark space.
“But incase you start to forget remembering who you’re waiting for,” he paused, opening the box and showing the ring. “Marry me?”
He watched those hazel eyes turn down to the ring, hearing the gasp. William stepped back, in total silence. Finally, after what seemed like hours later to Gabe, he looked back up.
“I-I can’t m-marry someone if I don’t k-know if he’s go-going to come h-home or n-not,” the rejection was soft, not meant to hurt.
Gabe’s eyes dropped to the box, slowly shutting it. His heart fell more then, if that were possible. His chin dipped in a simple nod, swallowing back on a dry, lumpy throat.
“Maybe next time then,” he whispered more to himself than to William. He picked up his bag, pulling it over his shoulder and stepping to the door. He pulled it open, glancing back at William with his best soldier face.
“I love you,” he breathed, saying it quietly. With that, he looked down and stepped out the door, closing it as he left the apartment for what might very well be the last time.
