We went over yesterday to see the in laws, Simon, Janet and Eric went over to see Ron and Alex and I stayed at their house. By the sounds of Ron's state, I was right not to take Alex over, at least Simon got to say goodbye. We then spent the remainder of the afternoon running around the local rec ground, and Alex did a very job of distracting Janet from her father's impending death.
This morning Alex, Cath, Amelia and I went to the Haxby NCT coffee morning, a bit of normality was nice. Simon came home for lunch, then we set off, dropped the cats off at Levisham and went over to Whitby. It was Simon's idea, I think he needed the distraction too. Alex looked a bit optimistic wondering around in the freezing weather, at high tide, with a bucket and spade, but we did manage to find him some sand! I had a quick troll round the shops, then we headed off to Sandsend to get some Alexanders and back to the station for dinner.
We've just now got the phone call to say that Ron died an hour ago, at 7:15, after a day spent fairly peacefully but on increased pain medication. He wasn't too badly off before he went into hospital for a fall, got a chest infection that degenerated into Pneumonia, then got MRSA where they put the tube down his nose to deal with the chest infection. Luckily the nursing home was able to take him back, so he died peacefully in his own room, with Janet by his side, 3 months short of his 100th birthday. I think he was ready to go, he'd only been in a home for a year, he'd been living fairly independently before that. The sad thing is that Alex probably won't remember him, but Simon seems OK, it was not unexpected and we are close enough to get over at short notice to say goodbye, but Simon's brother Andrew has missed is chance. Now we are just awaiting news of the funeral.
