Simon and I had one of those daft rows on Friday, mainly as I pointed out he really should have spoken to Mum before inviting an extra to her house for dinner that evening, and he really should ring he to let her know what he has done! His reply was a great flounce along the lines of well if my friends aren't welcome we'll go for fish and chips and leave your family to it. My reply of "thats fine, do what you want but let Mum know either way" rather took the wind out of his sails. Still, I suppose I should be glad he feels comfortable enough with my family to do that sort of thing. As it was we had a very nice shoulder of lamb with all the trimmings and there was enough to go round!
We set off on Saturday morning, stopped in York to drop the dogs off with Lib, and then stopped 2.5hours at the Nene Valley Railway for lunch. We didn't hang about there as they had a freight and mixed traffic gala on and our HRA passes weren't valid. My family, pay full fair to travel on a steam railway? Not bloody likely! We headed to Wrest Park, just below Bedford, for an hours walk about and leg stretch after that. The gardens are superb and it would have been nice to spend more time there. Plus it English Heritage, and we are all members so it was free! A true Yorkshire day out. After another 2 hours we arrived at the Alma in Wandsworth. Alex was so pleased to get into the hotel and be able to crawl around, poor boy. The family re-union was OK, but Dad's cousin are a set of 6 siblings so they are a bit exclusive and I don't really know any of them. Lots of them kept calling me Rebecca too. Uncle Patrick was there though, and pleasantly and unusually chatty. He was even rude about cousin Philip becoming a caricature of himself, unheard of! I put Alex to bed at 8 as he was knackered and Mum and then spent 1/2 hours each in his room to keep an eye on him. He slept soundly, of course, so we both missed big chunks of the party. Alex did thoroughly charm the rather attractive receptionist. If he keeps it up we'll be beating off the women with a stick!
On Sunday we had a slow breakfast with Dad's family, then when went to check out we discovered it had all been paid for. That cost someone a lot of money, but that side of the family can afford it.
After breakfast we headed over to Aunt Emma's, Dad's half sister. Ben got in touch and suggested he meets us there, and Emma hadn't known I was coming, then she got her Mum Barbara, (Dad's Step Mum) over too, so she went from lunch for 5 to lunch for 9, but she coped! I suspect that is the last time I shall see Granny B, as she looks really frail and is definitely loosing her marbles. The 1st time she asked what I was doing now and I said "nothing" she called me lazy in very snide tones, the 2nd time she said being a stay at home was probably for the best, within 10 minutes! Stijn is getting huge, but he doesn't move at all. Developmentally he seems at least a month behind Alex, so that is good and takes the pressure off.
After leaving Emma we headed to Far Coton to see some of the old neighbours. Its always odd going back to where you used to live! Then it was another 2 hours back to York.
Dad reckons we spent 11 hours in the car, getting back at 8 on Sunday evening. Poor Alex was very good, but he has screamed every time he's been in the car since, poor boy.
Mum has been over every day this week, on Monday so I could back to the dentist, yesterday as Dad had a meeting in York, though Alex slept through most of her visit, and today to go swimming! She isn't here tomorrow, and Alex and I are going out for morning tea, then on Friday the in-laws descend.
Simon got back mid afternoon yesterday and had us all in the garden ripping out weeds, after dragging us round the supermarket on Monday evening. I think he is trying to make for being so little by squeezing far too much in when he is around. Still, we have some cute pics of Alex crawling across the lawn, though the Gods alone know what Simon let him eat!
I don't feel like I've drawn breath this week, and I hope Alex sleep better tonight then last night or I will be unable to cope with Janet on Friday! I also hope Alex gets over his car aversion soon.

family, alex, weekends
