What an exciting weekend! Martin came over by bus on Friday afternoon, we went over to Levisham, I cooked us all dinner, then we spent most of the evening chasing sheep. It was only 1 ewe and 2 lambs, but she was absolutely determined she wasn’t going back up on the moor, so we chased her all over the place for 45 minutes, before we finally managed to get her in the car park and drop the barriers behind her. Then we just had to push her up the road, but instead of going through the open gate, she went for the cattle grid and fell down it. I think she only bruised her legs, but she was so knackered she barely had the strength to climb out, so hopefully we scared her enough that she won’t come back. We also did some fencing repairs. When the midges made us decide to finish off the next day we went inside for a pint, only for Panther to bring a mouse in, still very much alive, which we had to retrieve from under one of the beds. I love interacting with the local wild life!
On Saturday morning I woke up looked in the mirror, then tried to avoid doing so for that rest of the day. My left eye is half blood shot due, I assume from the scratchy itchiness, to the start of conjunctivitis, and my lower right eyelid had ballooned thanks to a midge bite. Nice.
I went to pick some beetroot to sell, only to discover that Richard hadn’t thinned the rows, so after a couple of hours doing that I ended up with a good lot to sell and a load of 1” round ones which I cooked off. They seemed to go down well with the others with a bit of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, but they just taste like baked earth to me!
I then went and found some violets for my eye, and some nettles to make a drawing poultice for a splinter of black thorn Simon has had stuck in his finger for a week. I can report that strong nettle decoction on oatmeal, applied as a hot poultice drawers splinters very well, but a violet leaf decoction doesn't do much for conjunctivitis, so Iw net back to camomile tea bags.
Saturday afternoon was spent doing the accounts, very exciting as always! I then made chilli for an early tea and at 19:30 we headed to Malton to have a beer with Martin before his train, only to discover we’d wandered into the middle of Suddaby’s (Malton brewery) beer festival. 40 different beers, it’s a hard life!! Martin just made his train and we went to the local for a final pint and to swap £260 of coinage for notes.
Sunday was spent stripping windows, re-roping wagons and trying to sort out Tony’s paranoia that no-one wants to work with him because the don’t like him, especially Simon, when we are all just busy. Luckily, as he knows I suffer from similar problems he’ll talk to me, so we can sort it out.
We also had the foot tappers down, who area a really good band, but even though the paddock was full no-one was buying beer, so we still have lots left. We may have a bar at the family fun day, a Dad’s play tent/crèche!
We had to clear up and take the beer tent down after all that, which I snuck off to make dinner half way through.
When we got home we had to have a sort out and pack as I’m off back to the railway with Simon and a load of his colleagues this afternoon and tomorrow for a network rail training day. We need a 2nd person with PTS, so I get a night in the Forest and Vale and food on the expenses, then back to work Wednesday. I bet we won’t get the honeymoon suit this time! I've also packed some camomile tea for my eye, which is under control now. Its still looks awful, but it feels normal again.
