Kurt peered over the table at Puck, obviously unsure of what to say. Puck couldn’t blame him.

“I…” Kurt trailed off and blushed. Puck chuckled.

“Don’t worry. I’m not sure where to start either.” Puck assured him, except Kurt looked the opposite of assured at the news.

“But the way you were talking about it…” Kurt trailed off again.

“Doesn’t mean I know everything.” Puck admitted. “Doesn’t mean I know how to do this with you.”

“I don’t know if I can do this if you don’t know what you’re doing.” Kurt snapped as he looked away.

Puck frowned. “Hey! That’s not what I said.” He objected. He knew the basics, hell he’d done the basics. He knew how to find out more, but that didn’t mean he knew how to be Kurt’s Dom.

And that made all the difference.

He could act like he knew it all, but it wouldn’t get them anywhere and it certainly wouldn’t help now.

“You’re different.” Puck said feebly. It was true, but such a cliché.

Kurt’s eyes narrowed. “because I’m a boy?” he asked sharply.

Puck swore softly. This wasn’t going well.

“Because this won’t be a game. You need more than that.” Puck said. Kurt began to examine his fingernails and Puck could tell that meant this was hitting too close to home for the countertenor’s comfort. Good.

“And what, pray tell, do you think I need?” Kurt challenged and Puck had to smirk a little at how sure Kurt was that he’d be wrong.

“Someone not afraid to call your bullshit.” Puck began and Kurt stilled. “Someone who will push back when you push them away, even if you’re acting like a right bitch.” Kurt swallowed uncomfortably but Puck kept going. “You need someone you’re not afraid to cling to when things get bad. Who’ll know what you need, even when you don’t.”

“Puck.” Kurt warned, but it wasn’t the safeword so Puck continued.

“You need someone who’ll take charge, tell you what to do, so you can let it all fall away.” Kurt began to shift uncomfortably in his seat and Puck had to chuckle. “And you’re so fucking scared that I’m right.”

The silence lay between them for a moment. Then:

“So what if you’re right?” Kurt said abruptly and Puck knew he was trying to mask his uncertainty as much as possible. “You saying you can provide that Puckerman?”

It was a challenge if Puck ever saw one.

A challenge Puck was enthusiastic to accept.

“Absolutely.” Puck said confidently and lent back in his chair. Content to watch Kurt squirm uncomfortably at the answer.

“So… what happens now?” Kurt asked. Puck sit up straighter.

“We need to make a list of limits.” He explained. “I know the list won’t be extensive ‘cos we’re both relatively new. And we also need to promise here and now to honor the safeword. I need to trust you to use it just as much as you trust me to obey it.”

Kurt nodded. He completely agreed with that. He looked across the table at Puck and the certainty he saw there calmed him.

“I promise.” He said. Puck nodded in acceptance. “I… I can already tell you a couple of my limits.” He continued and Puck smirked.

“Thought about this before have you?” he teased and Kurt really wished he could stop blushing. Just because he had didn’t mean he wanted to be called out for it.
“No name calling.” Kurt continued firmly, despite his blush. Puck nodded importantly.

“I did assume that one.” He said and to Kurt’s surprise wrote it down and when had Puck gotten a notepad and pen anyway? He seriously needed to start paying more attention.

“No permanent scarring period.” Kurt continued. “Temporary marks that don’t look conventional only go on skin that can be covered up.” Puck nodded, continuing to write. “No pain.”

“No pain without pleasure.” Puck corrected as he wrote it down, Kurt raised a worried eyebrow at him.

“Um-” he began.

“Kurt I know that’s what you meant and we need to be specific here.” Puck said. “I know you don’t want me to stop holding you just that little too hard, or bite your lip. But they cause pain.”

“The good kind.” Kurt objected.

“But still pain.” Puck pointed out. “I’m just clarifying. I don’t want there to be a mix up later.” Kurt nodded in understanding. How Puck had handled that completely convinced Kurt that this would be good.

“Okay.” Kurt agreed.

“And I need to add a limit.” Puck said abruptly and he wrote something down. Kurt looked at him expectantly.

“Yes?” Kurt asked, but Puck didn’t relay it. “Puck I can’t honor a limit if I don’t know what it is.” Puck looked away uncomfortably and Kurt was around the table and straddling him, hoping the kitchen chair could support both of them. “You can tell me.” Kurt encouraged and he felt rather than saw Puck pick up the notebook and Kurt put a hand on the arm he was using. “No, I don’t want to read it. I want you to tell me.” Puck’s mouth formed a hard stubborn line and Kurt turned his most adorable puppy eyed smile on him. A quick silent war happened between them and then Puck opened his mouth.

“No role playing.” Puck said and Kurt raised an eyebrow. Okay, a bit random, but why would saying it cost Puck so much? His expression must have conveyed that thought because Puck drew a shaky breath and explained: “I need it to always be you and me.

Kurt seriously wanted to find the girl that had caused his boyfriend- no his Dom- ¬to be so upset, but had to settle for kissing Puck instead (though kissing Puck could hardly be classified as settling).

“I’m only here with you.” Kurt promised and Puck smiled tentatively. Kurt grinned. He loved that he could put Puck at ease. They stayed like that for a while then Puck coughed awkwardly and pushed Kurt gently away until Kurt slid into the chair next to him instead.

“We need rules.” Puck said. “And we need to be able to think.” Kurt grinned again. He could make Puck stop thinking!

“Yeah.” Kurt agreed and they looked at the paper together.

Kurt smiled fondly at Puck before giving the paper his whole attention.

The wait would be worth it to set it up right.

It was too important.

A.N: Sorry about the wait! Real life sucks sometimes. More to come!
