The One With the New Semester, New Life

Next semester is going to be different.

And I know that I always say that, but this time it really is going to be different - and I am going to tell you why.

I have chosen my classes for next semester based upon what I actually want to do with my life. Hooray! Also, I have been led to believe that I will be holding a real job next semester with hours and a paycheck and taxes. I'm so legit. I have a both a reading list and a movie list which are not related to my classes (sort of, they're not included reading in my classes, although most of them were suggested by a teacher) and I am excited to read/watch them. I have a direction that I am traveling in. That is, eastward to Moscow. Or westward, depending on how you look at it, I suppose. If I ever get my term paper back, I might turn it into a 30 page honors thesis, and maybe even one day into a 150 page dissertation. Ha, my little term paper. Little did it know that it would one day grow into a massive, living bundle of analyses.

I'm also really going to go to the group fitness classes at SW/SR this semester. I know that I promised that I would do this last semester, but I chickened out every time. It seems like such a good idea until I'm standing outside with my tennis shoes in hand and feel very silly and scared. This semester, however, I've actually worked it into my schedule. I also cannot work on the weekends, because my place of employment is supposedly closed, so I'll need something to do that isn't reading Eisenstein or Jules Verne.

Wow, and I just realized that I am really focusing very much on very few things.

I'll be studying Russian at 9:35 every morning, which should be fun. My mom bought me Rosetta Stone for Christmas, which was woahexpensive and I really do hope that I justify spending that much. I'm afraid that I won't be able to live up to this whole learn-Russian-no-really thing, and that's a little bit scary, but what can you do? Fall '08, I'll be able to declare a double major...anything to put me ahead in grad school admissions.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I also have an Astronomy class for non-majors (aka Gen Ed credit) with a teacher who is supposedly very entertaining. It's not necessarily a very easy class, but it must be better than Age of Dinosaurs, which will be good because that class was a pain.

Also Tuesdays and Thursdays, I have my two English classes back-to-back. First is Jules Verne with Dr. Harpold, which I'm really hoping will be a lot of fun. I think that he liked me alright last semester, but it's so hard to tell with teachers sometimes. I think that my interest in Russia had gotten his attention by the end of the semester, and if my term paper did not absolutely fail (I got an A in the class, so I doubt that it did, although I have yet to receive it in the mail) than I don't see any reason why I should fear taking another class with him. I'm also taking Eisenstein and Disney with Dr. Kujundzic. I hope that it will be as interesting as it sounds, although you cannot really be sure until you step into the classroom. The course fits perfectly into my double major by description, but there isn't a lot about this professor at ratemyprofessors.com, so I'm a little bit nervous.

This update has been most uninteresting, I'm sure. I do apologize for that, but I like to sit and write sometimes. Tomorrow I'm leaving for the Sugar Bowl regatta over New Years in New Orleans. It should be a lot of fun, as long as we don't run into the crazy problems that we faced last year. That is, car trouble, dental catastrophe, drunken debauchery, lightning storms, etc.

I'm currently reading an anthology of short stories from Philip K. Dick. If you haven't heard of him, he is a very famous science fiction writer and I absolutely recommend reading something of his at some point.

And next semester will be different.

Really.
