Riverside Veterans Parade

Apr 16, 2011 20:15

The other night my dad asked me to photograph the Veterans' parade in downtown Riverside.  He specifically wanted pictures of the U.S. Volunteers group, which is mostly made up of Vietnamese and Cambodians (according to my dad).  I'm not really sure why he wanted photos of this group, but that's what he asked for (the group reminded me of photos of my grandfather in uniform for the U.S. Army).  My dad was originally was planning on coming down to Riverside this weekend so he could photograph the parade, but something came up in San Francisco and he couldn't make it.  It's too bad, I would have enjoyed hanging out with my dad for the morning.

But, needless to say, I was a bit cranky about having to wake up early (6:15 AM alarms should be a crime), but once I actually got to the parade grounds and set up camp on a nice shady ledge, it wasn't so bad.  The parade started at 10 AM from Riverside City College and circled around a few blocks on Magnolia.  I'm still not too familiar with Riverside, so I don't actually know if the parade passed by somewhere important-ish or why this location was chosen.  The parade itself was rather long, lasting almost two hours.  There were over 100 different partparade groups and it was really nice seeing so much support and love for our veterans and current troops.

Plus, I had a good amount of parade participants specifically throw candy my way ("hey girl with the camera!") so I really can't complain about being out there.  I do love me some veterans.  Thanks dad for serving!

Note to future self: apply sunblock prior to sitting out in the sun for two hours and not just when it feels like the skin on your feet and nose is about to peel off!
