Last weekend I tagged along with
pyrotic to get some photography experience at a wedding that she was photographing. I really appreciated getting to watch one of my favorite photographers at work. We stopped by the venue the day before so she could get an idea of the conditions she'd be working in and to also see where to set up the photobooth that her other photographer friend LeAnne would be running. The location of the wedding was out on the lawn at the Fig Garden Swim and Racquet Club off of Shaw and Maroa. The family did an amazing job decorating the area, especially with all the strings of lights they had set up. Once the sun set, it made for a very cozy and intimately lighted event.
It was a lot of fun photographing the bride and groom after the ceremony, especially since Jen set up all the poses and I could just work around her (and stay out of the shots!). There was definitely an alleviation of pressure at not having to be the main photographer, like at the last wedding I did (probably never, ever again). I am so impressed at how much attention to detail Jen and LeAnne put into photographing every bit of the wedding. Jen started out photographing the wedding party getting ready while LeAnne had detail duty, which included photographing the wedding rings. I alternated between both women to watch them at work and to help out where I could.
Later on in the evening, I tried my hand out at low-light photography. I've never been very comfortable with this, but Jenn gave me a lot of advice and encouragement (namely to just go out there and shoot!). Also, I learned what all the settings are on my Nikon Speedlight flash. Haha, I guess I could have read the Owner's Manual a long time ago, but who does that? It was cool fiddling around with the settings and getting to see how much of a change it really made. She also showed me how to adjust the settings on my camera so I could take photos using my flash without losing the ambient lighting in the background. No more blacked out backgrounds!
The wedding itself was a lot of fun, and the wedding family was super nice (they fed us!) and the bride's dad cracked me up right off the bat. He's definitely a character and the bride is lucky to have him for a father. I wound up not photographing very much during the event (although I do have a wholelotta blurry photos from the dance floor haha), but I walked away from this event with a lot of valuable photography experience and knowledge. Yeah, I think the night was well worth it. Forrealz.
