The skirt report

Feb 05, 2008 14:03

as i stated i purchased a skirt from Modest Clothing (which is having web page problems and is selling from their old site, Tznius dot com until they get it fixed)

so i gave the black corduroy wrap skirt the "real life" test...

This is a wrap skirt, 40 inches long, in black corduroy.  The corduroy turned out to be lighter, finer, and more drape able ( Read more... )

I know in the late 16th c there were black sheer veils. Maybe a black hood instead?

Wasn't white considered a mourning color in Europe in the middle ages?

That's what I remember from my European History classes.

i think it depends on where exactly and when exactly...
but i will happily use that as an excuse for my white veils.

it was mourning for nobility/royalty, according to my "I'm pretty sure i read it somewhere but I'm not near my library at the moment" sources.

Thank you for posting that link though - they had directions as to all kinds of cool ways to wrap/tie a headscarf that could be cool sometime.

i'm looking at those skirts and they look wonderful. however...i'm a size 24 and the largest they go up to is 16? any ideas where i can get one that's larger than 16 or do you think they could do one that's larger?

I'm in the same boat (well, more like the size 20-22 range, but still...).

well, i am anywhere between a 18 and a 20... and it was ok on me, but i am losing weight.... i wear a 0x or a 1x in skirts at Catherine shops...

as to making one larger? like i said. it looks very simple. i would suggest maybe getting one and seeing if it works on you, and if it doesnt? make one bigger...

i don't know if THEY do custom work, but i know someone who does... for plus sizes.....

also does business as "bon bon plus"
if you want to, i bet you could point her at the site and say "like that!"
say hi for me.

and also in the SCA most of the seamstresses do plus size work....

ataniell93 (one of the maintainers at modest_style) is in that size range, and has had good things to say about Shukr in the past.

Interesting bit on how we mourn - I wear a lot of black anyway, so when I lost my best friend to cancer in July it really wasn't meaningful to me as a "mourning" thing. I instead chose to get a couple more items in her favorite color (purple) and add them to my wardrobe. Now whenever I wear them I think of her.

I also thought about getting a tattoo in her memory, so that the reminder would always be with me. I eventually decided not to, mostly because her husband gave me one of the rings she always wore and now I always wear. It serves that same kind of emotional need for me.

while i almost always wear "some" black, i rarely wear head to toe black, so this has been a bit of work.

i also have been covering my head a bit more.. scarves, bandannas, snoods...

i have been knotting Rosaries in her favorite colors, to hand out as memorials.. so thats something also. i suspect i will never see green in the same way again...

i'm the same way. i'm a mostly black person (except at work where i'm forced to be "normal"). if i've lost someone i usually take a color that they like or a trinket they've given me and add it to my wardrobe. luckily i haven't had to *mourn* in a while now **knock on wood**
