People around here seem to be getting better about SDs working. So I dont have so many problems. I still have the idiot parents who encourage their kid to pet, Ive had to get rude on 2-3 occasions.
I really have to figure out soon on what I'm going to do with Sunny aging and my health getting worse. I am really reluctant to get another dog since Suns always preferred to be an only dog. Plus what ever dog I get should probably be a big dog as my own mobility is failing. I don't know

well, even a small dog can pick stuff up for you.. but a big dog can help with mobility directly..

on the other hand a smallish pit bull can still put socks on and off, and they pull really well! strong for tehir size...

I am not yet ready to battle BSL with a pit, plus I am currently having a go round with my neighbor over his horribly behaved pitbull. My apartment manager has already said she would support me in any breed I choose including any that are on our apartments banned list. But it would not look good for me to be bitching about his pit then get one myself. Granted he also smuggled his in avoiding the ban and the pet deposit. Due to that the behavior issues, his lack of picking up after it and him leaving it alone for 3 days they are he has to get rid of it ASAP or be evicted.

i understand the issues with BSL.

his pit bull, poor baby.. i feel sorry for it. its his fault.

let me think and get back to you, something is rattling around in the back of my head, i need it to come forward

Yes it is his fault. Its still young enough it can be taught manners and be a very good dog but unfortunately I fore see it as being one of the bullies that gives the breed a bad name. It does not even know what "no" means and at 4months it should.

most pitties are good dogs at heart. but people who i wouldnt give a stuffed toy to end up owning them.

unfortunately the dsame thing has begun happening to Caucasian Mountain Dogs (bella's breed) which is how we got her... and if a dog her size and .. well the USUAL temper of these dogs is a fast "trigger" and lethal response. thats breed dstandard.. she is lower oh trigger and aggression than most.

I knew a little about the CMDs and was surprised when you picked her to train due to the breed being known for such an aggressive guard dog. I watched a show on them a long time ago and even the 6week old pups got very pissed at being put on their backs ( ... )

yea, its why Im not letting people push me into getting something NOW. I don't yet have all the facts I need to decide. Things I do know;

Has to be good with Sun. Unlike some handlers I am not rehoming my old dog to make room for a new one. He is already approved to stay here without cost when he retires.
smart/quick learning
short/low maintenance coat-Shedding is ok, Sun really blows the heck out of his coat 2x a year.
mellow
medium/low energy level-Not something thats gonna want to be a lump on the rug but also not something like a Border Collie that will go nuts because I cannot keep up with it.

when you DO get a new dog.... fabricdragon November 5 2011, 15:46:07 UTC
well.... have you looked at standard poodle?
they need maintenance for their coats, but you can keep them sheared...
they are whip bang smart, you have to be careful or they will train YOU, and while they do need their exercise they are not as hyper as a border collie.
perhaps they are a bit higher energy than optimal, but the whip smart adds up.

almost any of the mastif types are low energy, some are smart, most are very pleasant... coat varies.

look at most of the feild/hunting dogs... if they are from lines bred to WORK they have brains. the show lines not so much...

now i had good working Shetland Sheepdogs, and theya re lower energy than a border collie, and smart and small, but .. perhaps more energy than you want

i strongly suggest no german shepherds as they shed.. and shed.... and shed... i love them to death but if you are looking for a low maintenence shed/coat they are not it.
