I knew a little about the CMDs and was surprised when you picked her to train due to the breed being known for such an aggressive guard dog. I watched a show on them a long time ago and even the 6week old pups got very pissed at being put on their backs.
I am very glad shes working out for you, I do think its going to be important to stress to those curious about her to know she is not typical of the breed(I'm pretty sure you are already on top of that tho :). I know Ive had people fall in love with Sunny and want to try to get one like him. I try to steer them away from it and instead to support their local pound or rescue since he is a rescue. If they continue to insist they want one exactly like him then Ill give them Pap911s info since he is more pap than doxie.
For me tho I think I still need to wait abit and let the docs 1st figure out whats going on. I know arthritis and bursitis are going on in the right hip but I dont know whats causing the neuralgia in my face and right thigh or the sciatica. They think the trransplant drug is attacking the CNS but can't confirm it since no one knows the drug and as of yet attempts to get to New Orleans to the Oschners transplant hospital are meeting insurance brick walls.

Bella is a lovely girl and Im so happy shes letting you have so much more freedom. I may just wait for my friend to have another Pap litter next year or adopt one of her older pups.

i recognized her breed immediately at the shelter...
it...isnt a breed i would have gone looking for for this purpose.

but in any breed there are wide variations. she is apparently at the upper end of sociability and the lower end of aggression.

i would actually wonder if she was crossed with something more.. uh..laid back? except the drug dealer had two, was breeding for purebred pups, AND two breeders identified her from pictures IMMEDIATELY as being Caucasion Ovcharkha (CO)

but still, its always possible she has something more laid back in her background.. or she could just be a VERY laid back CO who has been rather intensively socialized owing to circumstances.

but heck NO she isnt typical.
not hardly

mind, so far i have had VERY good luck in picking out dogs. all my dogs ahve been rescues... and while i wont say i did the best job training any of them, they have all been fabulous dogs temperment wise.... and i even made them re test Bella because i was certain they were wrong about her not being good with cats (i was right)

shrug
but i cant "explain" how to do it. i just seem to be a good judge of mellow friendly dogs.

yeah, figure out whats causing the neuraligia and etc... because then you will have a better idea of what you NEED. in the meantime just start considering whats the smallest dog that can still do mobility assist? keys and etc picked up? help with socks, get shoes, etc

yea, its why Im not letting people push me into getting something NOW. I don't yet have all the facts I need to decide. Things I do know;

Has to be good with Sun. Unlike some handlers I am not rehoming my old dog to make room for a new one. He is already approved to stay here without cost when he retires.
smart/quick learning
short/low maintenance coat-Shedding is ok, Sun really blows the heck out of his coat 2x a year.
mellow
medium/low energy level-Not something thats gonna want to be a lump on the rug but also not something like a Border Collie that will go nuts because I cannot keep up with it.

when you DO get a new dog.... fabricdragon November 5 2011, 15:46:07 UTC
well.... have you looked at standard poodle?
they need maintenance for their coats, but you can keep them sheared...
they are whip bang smart, you have to be careful or they will train YOU, and while they do need their exercise they are not as hyper as a border collie.
perhaps they are a bit higher energy than optimal, but the whip smart adds up.

almost any of the mastif types are low energy, some are smart, most are very pleasant... coat varies.

look at most of the feild/hunting dogs... if they are from lines bred to WORK they have brains. the show lines not so much...

now i had good working Shetland Sheepdogs, and theya re lower energy than a border collie, and smart and small, but .. perhaps more energy than you want

i strongly suggest no german shepherds as they shed.. and shed.... and shed... i love them to death but if you are looking for a low maintenence shed/coat they are not it.
