college blog: decisions...

Oct 09, 2011 17:19

so i have a decision to make. i would love to hear opinions...

i am currently signed up for 4 classes. this is the minimum for full time. i already have "permission" to take 3 classes if i want to for this quarter.
i am considering dropping a class since they are all pretty intensive on homework hours....

MONDAY (tomorrow) is the last day of Drop/ Add. if i drop a class by tomorrow it vanishes from my transcript and i am not paying for it either. if i withdraw any time after that (but before finals time) i get a "w" for the class, pay full price for it, and it affects my "completion rate" (not my GPA)...

so i really would prefer to make a decision by tomorrow....i CAN afford a W if i need to, i havent withdrawn from any classes previously.

NOTE: all of these classes are required for my degree. all of them are on the normal degree track about now... all of them are pre requisits for other future classes...

Monday i have Graphics 2.
Graphcs 2 is computers, mostly photoshop and adobe illustrator. used to make the design boards we turn in in *every* class from now on i decided to take this because there are only about 5 people other than me taking it this quarter. this means tons of extra class time per student. this is especially important since the tutor i used for graphics 1 has graduated....The teacher is a bit odd, but she does know THIS topic. however its a difficult topic for me, and its her specialty, so sometimes we dont communicate well. i have always gotten at least an A- in her classes. Usually an A.

Thursday i have Draping and Portfolio Preparation
Draping is a very time intensive class, with a very demanding teacher (she is very good also) one unfinished seam means an F. i know people who have flunked this course. this requires learning to create finished flat paper patterns from draping muslin. lots of sewing time required. the final project will be mocked up in cheap fabric and then made in the real fabric. also all patterns must be turned in in ink, and pristine.(good copies) i CAN do this class, but its a ton of work, and frankly it scares my GPA. before i graduate i will take this, and advanced draping at a minimum. this is a pre requirement for advanced patternmaking and most of the other sewing classes i think.

Portfolio Preparation is a very time intensive class with a relaxed and friendly teacher (who is also quite good). you are assigned an inspiration, and must do detailed research, make up a lot of mood boards and illustrations (basically what i learned in graphics 1 and am learning in graphics 2) and then CREATE THE PATTERNS and sew the garments in a mock up, and then final fabric (ouch$$$). most of your grade is the research and the patterns and the boards, the garments are 20% of your grade. people HAVE gotten internships and jobs from the project they did in this class. i am already quite happily designing based on the inspiration assigned (Zaha Hadid)..... not so sure about the sewing time though...

Friday i have Fashion Sketching 2 with Mr. Ercoli.
this is the hand drawing of fashion figures, flats, and design boards, and honestly a lot of the hand done version of what i do in graphics.. but we usually IMPORT our hand sketches into graphics, so its used.. a lot. Mr Ercoli is very very relaxed. as long as you put in a good try you will pass. i have never gotten less than an A in any of his classes. he is also very helpful about design for other classes if you are stuck on how to illustrate it.. for this class we must draw 14 figures, front and back (total 28)! for both midterm and finals, plus the pattern flats, plus the research....

i figure keeping fashion sketch 2 is a "gimmee". YES its a lot of work, but i need it and i can use some of that in other classes with minor modifications. hand drawing the basic fashion figure is used in every class. also its Mr. Ercoli and i know if i get stuck he will help me as much as he is allowed. he doesnt scare me. (yes we are now ranking teachers based on my anxiety levels)

i really am not inclined to drop graphics 2, since graphics 1 had 15 students and this one has like 5.... if i take it next term it might be packed. also i use this in every class from now on.... the teacher makes me twitch a little... but not too bad.

so that pits draping against portfolio prep. BOTH mean long hours in the sewing labs. BOTH mean fabric purchases, not just samples, heck, each of them is about 2 classes worth of work all by themselves.....
now i gotta admit, i am inclined to drop draping. the draping teacher makes me twitch . the port prep teacher doesnt. i know people who have flunked that specific draping teacher, the port prep teacher has a rep of warning you in time to withdraw at least (as does my teacher i had for clothing construction)

but its partly because i am going to be able to use a lot of SCAdian techniques in this *specific* assignment (zero waste cutting, medieval and early renn construction! arabic influenced style!!!) where Draping is just plain gonna be work.

i COULD pull this all off.
its possible. if i manage my time well and dont get too distracted (HAH) and all that...
or i can drop one and try to pull A's out in the three i have left.

opinions?

NOTE: just because a teacher sets off my anxiety doesnt mean there is anything wrong with them. they may be perfectly nice people, who just happen to have something in their voice or whatever that sets off my anxiety. i am including the information because it relates to my stress levels, and thats ALL

if you can think of any more info i need, or people i should talk to thats helpful too!
