you know.. i really, seriously, thought this was a LOGIC class, not an Ethics and modern society/sociology class. funny its LISTED as a logic class on my syllabus..... ( Read more... )
In other words, you're arguing with him and refusing to accept that, since he's the teacher, he's the authority and therefore knows better than you.
You should report this cretin to the head of the relevant department/college. Refrain from suggesting that he evidently suffers from megalomania and borderline monomania, no matter how much you're tempted to do so.
ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder is the CORRECT term that this person is attempting to use) does not apply at all in this case. You are not a child or a teen, and this person is not your parent. You are not lying, breaking rules, cursing, having angry outbursts, blaming others for your misdeeds, or being vengeful with/to him/her. You are simply disagreeing what you thought was a classroom discussion, about a subject you have experience with.
She/He is wholesale tossing out most of the DSM-IV on the criteria that an easy physical reason (tumor, etc) cannot be pointed out as a basis for an 'illness' so it's not an illness. This is not something that is held by most members of the AMA, and this is not a medical/psychology class, but supposedly one on logic. Her pet theory on mental disorders have no place in it.
Something else to note - any and all diagnostic reports on ODD REQUIRE a 6 month + observational period to even diagnose.
Stating that you 'may have it' is not just incorrect (given the dynamic and the situation), even if it was correct, and you were a child and this was a parent (and you'd been acting out in many different ways) it still would be incorrect, and extremely premature.
This needs to be reported. Succinctly.
"I disagreed on a psychological issue (which was not in the scope of the LOGIC class) with this teacher, one where the teacher, to my knowledge, disagrees with current accepted medical guidelines, and the teacher told me that I was likely ODD, a 'diagnosis' that requires a parent child dynamic and at minimum 6 months of behavioral analysis, including lying, acting out, anger management issues, deception and vengeful behavior." (Is this teacher some sort of psychologist/psychiatrist?? )
That you believe that this teacher said this - in an attempt to intimidate you and make you shut up.
