this is stuff i heard from the doctor directly, or overheard back when they let me be in the room:
1. when wayne was put on insulin his doctor would not show him how to self inject.
wayne had to ask a friend who is a diabetic how to do it and where to give himself shots. the doctor , for some reason, would NOT teach him, nor would anyone in the office. YES i was there at the time.
2. most of his diabetic education has been coming from our diabetic friends, and the blogs i have found, or the web. please note that its TOUGH to get answers that way since neither of us has a good grip on what questions to ask.
3. the doctor wanted us to go to a diabetic education thing at the hospital. its OUT OF POCKET cost was over 500 bucks, up front. we cant afford it. when we told him that he said "thats all there is... sorry"
4. i have never heard of a Diabetes Education nurse. this goes with the "don't know what questions to ask"
5. wayne was finally given an appt with an endocrinologist. it was for three mos from the referral. that means its two weeks from now
6. wayne called to see if he could get an appt (emergency, like today) and the answer was no. i do not think he explained why clearly..... nor did he ask for a walk in blood sugar stick... so i will be trying to talk to a doctor today about that.
you all may remember that when i fell on the metal shelving point and hurt my ribs, i got online and asked about if i could wait until morning. i was in agony and no, i dont have a good pain threshold.
i was online asking if i had to go to the hospital because the local hospital (which was since closed, thk Gd) was THAT bad.
The doctor we see now is .......better than the old one. which isnt saying much.
left to myself i would drive up to Boston to see Dr. Betsy rather than see any doctor in this area.
the doctors in Lancaster (1.5 hours drive) where my parents live seem to be pretty good...
the doctors in the suburbs seem ok usually, although i had a gynecologist start a religious argument with me while doing a cancer test/scrape with NO anesthetic, so thats not always a good indicator
i live in one of the poor neighborhoods, in a city with one of the highest malpractice rates/insurance rates around. given the quality of doctors i have seen i am not surprised.
should wayne be more proactive about his care? yes
should wayne take more responsibility for the stuff he DOES know? hell yes.
should wayne not stuff his face full of carbs every meal. dmn straight.
but i MUST point out that i cant say its an "unwillingness to see a diabetic nurse" when we didnt know they existed, or an unwillingness to go to diabetes education when we cannot afford it.
awf it, its unlocked. maybe someone knows a better local doctor
