Handicapped assistance animals

an online friend has a blog for her assistance dog....HERE.. which is sort of like the LJ user  bboa   who is also an assistance dog. (and well worth reading i might add)

but one of the posts on Meet Luigi had a great idea that i passed on to my father (who has a hearing ear dog)
Her dog has his own postcards and business cards!

i know.. you get used to seeing eye dogs. they need to be large enough to have the person's hand on the harness.. and steer...
and there are some breeds that have a great reputation for this, and some LINES that have been bred specifically for seeing eye service.

obviously that influences a person's idea of what a "service dog" looks like.. especially when you see the rottweiler helping the person in the wheelchair.

but its like anything people do... if it doesnt depend on brawn, it can be done by anyone regardless of size.

a small dog is actually a very good choice for a lot of "alert" animals and hearing ear animals. because it is much easier to take them with you in offices, airplanes, etc.
my dad's dog is mid sized (small to me) a cross between a sheltie and a border collie. and she doesnt fit in airplanes well....although she does her best.

even one of those wind up toys.. i mean "pocket dogs" could be a good seizure alert or blood sugar or maybe even a hearing ear dog.. as long as you didnt expect them to do any tasks requiring strength
