Rosaries for the Military, MRIs, Lent. etc

Feb 25, 2009 06:12

because i had some folks ask me about the Rosaries i make that can go through MRIs (i learned to make them for ladyrowansplace , may she rest in peace) and the similar ones i make for the Military and to give away....

The first thing is, i learned to make these for my dear lady Ro ( ladyrowansplace on live journal) who died just over a year ago of Colon Cancer.  Please keep her , and her family and husband, in your prayers and thoughts.  she was always happy to accept good thoughts ffrom any one, of any religion.
Now her last request: GO GET YOUR COLON SCREENING.  Remember that anyone with chronic bowel issues is at higher risk.

The place i learned to make these Rosaries is Rosary Army.  They give away Rosaries, free of charge, to whomever asks for them.  Thats it.. they dont proselytize you, or go knocking on doors.. they just give away Rosaries to people who ASK for them. They make a lot of them in house, and accept donated Rosaries from volunteer labor like  me.  They also have loads of info on how to make them, and the prayers, and general Rosary information, but only if you go to them and read it...

The instructions on how to make the knots are  HERE.  its available as a pdf file or a video.... remember that everyone has their own tricks and techniques for any hand craft...  Rosary Army has a forum, it requires you to register, but you do NOT need to register to read the instructions, donate Rosaries, or etc. just to talk on the Forums  The forums are worthwhile as they have many experienced Rosary makers who can share tips and techniques and help you solve problems,  (and a prayer  request section, and general Catholic oriented chat ) but if you don't want to join the forum you can always email me with any knotting questions.

Who gets them?

If you are making them for Rosary Army, they have donation rules and etc on their webpage so i wont go over it again. but remember if you dont want to buy Crucifixes, you can send them the Rosaries without the final attachment step and they will take care of the rest!

For the Military there are rules about what color they can take into the field (black always works, so do most camo colors) AND they cannot have a shiny metal crucifix, because it could give their location away in the field.  for field use they must have a black  or brown wood or plastic crucifix, or a knotted cord cross.  Different collection groups have their own rules about what they will accept..
if you are sending one directly to a person in the military, just follow the basic rules and you will be fine.. if you are sending them to one of the big collection groups, they have their own rules about whether they only accept plastic crucifixes and so on...
There are links on the Rosary Army web page, or you can email me and i can put you in touch with Clo, who collects for the military and is right now in Desperate need of Rosaries for the deployed navy.. she has several thousand orders...

If you are making them to give away i will tell you that from my experience having several available to choose from makes people more likely to accept one.  i think its the "i don't want to take your last one" syndrome.  Also people love to watch me make them, and i give away the most when people see me do the knots. i suspect because there is no better proof of "oh, you made this yourself?" than seeing me make one.

Supplies:

The basic twine used is a #36 Masons Twine, which  is sort of available at hardware stores.  i say sort of, because the stuff i get at Home depot doesnt make "pretty" knots that are as easy to do as the twine you get from the various specialty suppliers.  it is always easier to learn on good supplies. thats true of ANY craft project.  bad supplies make things difficult.

Fishnet Co and FNT Industries are two of the major suppliers of pretty Twine,  FNT also has instructions for making the knotted cross instead of attaching a Crucifix.

Divine Twine and Shady Twine are two of my favorite hand dyed Twine suppliers. ... they hand dye lengths of twine pre-cut for Rosary making, and both of them are staffed by very nice people (staffed is sort of a strong word.. they are very small businesses)

Autom is one of the sources for inexpensive metal crucifixes. and Our Lady's Rosary Makers is the best source for inexpensive plastic ones, but they have Metal as well.

and remember that if you need only a few of something to get started, just email  me and i can send you some starter supplies, as can Divine Twine, and several other folks from Rosary Army.... mostly because our hands get tired and we love to have more people making Rosaries.

yes my fingers are better.  yes they still hurt.  apparently i have  only bruised them, and one is bruised at the knuckle, so typing is  not fun.

and having nothing to do with any of that:
