In brief? I bought some lunch boxes, and am babbling about diet, recipes, bento, how neat the new toys lunch boxes are and so on....
feel free to ignore......
Now that i have your attention.........
after reading about a lunch box on one of the LJ communities about Bento boxes, probably "
eat_my_bento " i wandered over to the website for "
Laptop Lunch boxes" a made in the usa lunch box system with all sorts of "free of this nasty stuff usually found in plastic" awards and neat links...... this seeming to be a neat system, but wanting to actually get my hands on one before i bought one, i cunningly arranged (not) for
whouseknecht to drop his work keys while doing something here at home, so i HAD to drive out to deliver the keys, which put me about 15 minutes away from
Earth Mart , one of the local stores that carries Laptop Lunches.
they are nice folks out there, having a goodly number of interesting things, including wood yo yo toys, and organic cotton stuff, and cosmetics and a few other odds and ends... but of course i went for the lunch boxes.
The system is a snap shut lunch box, that comes with a skinny utensil space (and some short utensils that fit there) and a larger flat area, along with four compartments that fit pretty exactly in place.. (oh yeah, one of them has a lid for gooey stuff, and they have a "dip and sauce box" that fits in there too) while my first thought was "this isnt big enough" i thought about it again and realized that it probably WAS big enough (if you packed good food and not junk) for what i should be eating......
so i got some.
one of them is a black box with red inside bits (very Asian, it doesn't look like plastic at first glance) and the other two are multi colored. Wayne's is mostly blue, and mine is mostly (duh) purple. they have insulated carry bags and a (insufficiently sized, for me anyway) water bottle. i got the red and black one figuring in a pinch i could use it for feast gear at SCA events, it really looks like something Japanese, and not plastic....
i am hoping that having a "portion sized" set of boxes i will be better able to judge how much lunch to make. Also having spent some bucks on the boxes i hope it will be incentive for me to actually get off my duff and make my own lunch, (and Wayne's) instead of planning to do it and eating at Wendy's because i am starving and didnt get food started in time.
Sooo.....
anyone have any good recipes for "packable lunch"? i had meatloaf suggested as "something wayne would eat" even if i am more of a salad and tofu type......
meatloaf recipe? especially for stuff that packs well?
meatballs? onigiri? grilled chicken recipe? bueller?
home made dressing recipe? dips? how to make mustard? best ways to get cut up fruit to stay fresh? c'mon.... trot out your "pack lunch for two people who eat like they are different species" talents..
ps, we both must avoid raw onions....i can't have garlic, at least in any serious amount, but he can have more than i can. and keep the sugar on the low side, please.
