Just back from Lunacon, in Rye Brook NY. I had fun, saw lots of my friends, and even sold some stuff.... but it wasnt all good....
The thing is, i know its my own fault. I got food poisoning Saturday evening because i was stupid.
I spent the night throwing up and trying to keep down ice chips and little sips of water, finally going to sleep at about 6 am. This meant i showed up late on sunday morning, and immediately asked for help to pack down, because i had to drive myself home. One of the other dealer's husbands helped me pack, and several of my friends ran and got me ice, watched my booth, and otherwise helped out. to be honest i don't really remember much about Sunday, except for wanting to keel over.
i drove home, and got an electrolyte drink on the way.. and got home safely (barely).
after a lot of thought
whouseknecht and i agreed that part of the problem was that i had thrown up all the nutrition (if you can call it that) so functionally i hadnt eaten since maybe lunch Saturday... or maybe breakfast Saturday. (remember i dehydrate easily and am a hypoglycemic) so after some thought about what i could eat we skipped everything with tomato sauce, everything with cheese, and everything with fish.. which doesnt leave a lot.
so we went out to Fuji Japanese Steak House and had Hibachi. i didnt appreciate it as much as usual, but ginger sauce, ginger salad dressing, Miso soup, vegetables, and filet mignon stayed down, and i felt MUCH better.
Oh, yeah. and the other thing was the corsets.
i carry Brute Force Leather corsets (you know, LJ user
brute_force makes them, they are great.) and after NonCon in Vassar college i was REALLY low on corsets, so i re-ordered to be shipped to the lunacon hotel. Now Tom had warned me that the corsets were mostly at a fair in Florida with a minion, but his minion could ship them to me. especially since i was willing to take "random selections" of colors.
So as far as anyone knew the minion was shipping them, and TOLD Tom she would have them to me by Friday.
She didnt ship them, apparently she just skipped off on a mini vacation. In fact poor Tom had to fly down to Florida because the minion didnt show up at the fair on saturday either. She showed up late on sunday, and was surprised she got fired. There are more details, but its not my business to talk about... but i , naturally, thought i must have goofed up somehow, and was badgering the convention and hotel people about my package..
(one ICON many years back, a package DID get shipped to my hotel, and they swore it wasnt there.. they found it on Monday in their store room... so i assumed that was what was going on this time.)
anyway, the next event i will be at is Ecumenicon, in Maryland. I have to leave early on Sunday to meet my parents at Longwood Gardens, because that last weekend at Longwood (March 28, 29, 30) is the big Orchid Show. with Vendors coming from all over, including some of the people i saw at the Philadelphia Flower Show, but also some folks who just do Orchid Shows coming in from Hawaii and Japan and so on.
I am looking forward to Ecumenicon, as always. Its a very small friendly convention, and at this point i know most of the folks. and all the vendors, naturally, so its more relaxed than many events. but naturally the one day i can go to an orchid show with dad is the last day of Ecumenicon.
After Ecumenicon is ICON. Sort of the polar opposite as far as events go.... Ecumenicon is small, very class intensive, and "relaxed". ICON is huge, spread out at SUNY at Stony Brook NY, and i doubt you COULD know even half the people there. There are more dealers at ICON than there are people at Ecumenicon, i suspect. It can be a bit of whiplash.
i still like going and its fun.. and a lot of times Emerald Rose plays. Being a merchant i dont get to go to much outside the dealers room... darn it!
i am finishing an "Emerald Rose" necklace for ICON, however. It is a necklace with green and emerald beads, a Sterling Silver Rose with green enamel, and a few other things.
Oh, and a book suggestion... get your hands on a copy of "Orchid fever" its a saga of how idiotic govt regulations are, crazy orchid nuts, people going to the ends of the earth over orchids, and murder, attack dogs, secrecy, and conspiracy...its a great read.
