In a way, he envies her. To him, and to the rest of the wizarding world, she will always be beautiful. She will always be young.

When he closes his eyes, he pictures her many faces. There’s the little, spunky redhead in pigtails, making disgusted faces at him when he is rude. There’s an awkward teenager whose personality radiates and whose smile affects him like a bolo punch to the stomach. Later still, there’s the image of a new mother, softer, and glowing, but still familiar enough that the ache inside of his chest pangs and reminds him that his feelings are real.

She was real.

Unfortunately, the years have not treated him as kindly. Creases line his forehead and mouth. He has always been a man of shadows, but lately they seem to be making themselves a permanent fixture underneath his eyes and in the hollows of his cheeks. He sees her son, whose eyes are hers-just as bright and merely windows of emotion-and compares them to his own when he studies himself in the mirror. His eyes are tired and reflect little of what he is feeling. ‘Have they always looked this way?’ he wonders, ‘or are they a product of the life I live?’ Her voice in his head assures him that it is the latter.

He mourns her still, sometimes. It doesn’t happen as often as it used to, though it happens more when he has been around her son. He has never been fond of self-pitying behavior, and even less of self-deprecating behavior, so he does not let his moods last long. These are the times that he reminds himself that she is lucky to be forever young and beautiful. She is frozen in time as the world decays around her.

He has certainly decayed, and wonders what she would say were it possible for her to see him. It would probably be a smart remark…Lily did love to take the mickey out of him. After a while, he didn’t mind so much.

He wouldn’t mind now, simply because he’d have the chance to see her dimpled smile again, unlined and unaffected by decades passed. Harry, most unfortunately, did not inherit her lovely smile. He thinks it’s a pity. The only part of her that she passed on is her eyes, and there were so many other brilliant parts. Severus dreams of them, and wishes he could remember enough to commit every single part to memory.

She may have not been his, but he will always be hers, whether he is crippled from time, wrinkled, or grey.

He will always love her.
