“When?”
“Tonight?” She shuffled towards him and stood on her toes to whisper in his ear. “I nicked James’s cloak.”
He was mildly impressed. “Such deviant behavior from a prefect. How did you manage that?” Sometimes she still managed to surprise him. He liked that.
“I can’t have you knowing my secrets,” she replied lightly. “I might need to nick something from you someday.”
“You realize that you would be risking a severe hexing, of course.”
“Of course.”
He leaned down so that the tip of his nose grazed her cheek and then her ear. She shivered under his touch. “Are you certain you want to do this?”
She placed her hand on his chest and gently pushed him away. “Yes,” she assured him, “I am.” There was a hint of a smile on her face-the shadow of a dimple-and then she turned so that all he could see was the torchlight reflecting off of her hair. He didn’t even bother to say anything as she rounded the corner, but committed the image to memory.
He would say what had been on his mind for the past year tonight. It couldn’t come quickly enough.
