Title: Carpe Diem: Parts II and III (set after episode "Bang")
“Do you want some coffee?” Bree asked.
“Yes, that’d be great” Lynette responded as she followed Bree into the kitchen. Lynette took a seat on the barstool while Bree prepared the coffee pot.
“Bree, I really want to thank you for coming to visit me last night. I enjoyed your company and I’m so sorry for nodding off in the middle of our chat. I know you were in the middle of explaining why you were crying last night…I’m fully conscious now, so I’m here to listen” Lynette hinted.
Bree didn’t expect Lynette to remember their conversation from last night. She wasn’t prepared to finish what she began to say in the hospital. Bree paused, her hands pressed down on the counter and head tilted down, after turning the coffee pot on.
“Everything is fine. What I have to say can wait until you are fully recovered” Bree said.
“Come on Bree, I’m fine” Lynette responded.
Bree shook her head slightly and began to quietly sob, but her weeping was not lost to Lynette’s ears. Lynette jumped down from the barstool and rushed over to Bree. She placed her hand around her waist and leaned in close to her ear.
“Bree, honey, what’s wrong. Please tell me what has you so upset. Is it Orson, the kids, what?” Lynette pleaded as she rubbed Bree’s back tenderly.
“Lynette, please…it’s nothing” Bree responded as she tried unsuccessfully to escape Lynette’s touch.
“I’m not leaving her until you start talking…you know how persistent I am, Bree!” Lynette said with determination. “You can tell me anything, sweetie.”
Bree knew Lynette’s stubborn nature all too well and she was fighting a losing battle. As she stared at the smirk on Lynette’s face, she could feel her heart begin to beat faster. Bree knew that it was now or never…now was just as good a time as any in the future. Bree finally found the courage she needed to reveal her feelings. Bree turned towards Lynette and took the blondes hands in her own. “Lynette, when I thought you were in danger I was terrified. I could literally feel a something ripping apart my heart. You mean so much more to me than any other friend…” Bree began to explain.
“Bree, what are you trying to say” Lynette said impatiently.
“My feelings have changed…deepened” Bree said hoping that Lynette would understand her meaning. Instead, Lynette looked at Bree with her head tilted and a confused look in her eyes.
“Oh God!” Bree said when she realized Lynette wasn’t comprehending her meaning.
“Bree, I don’t think I under…” Lynette started to say.
“I love you…I’m in love with you, Lynette” Bree interrupted with a whisper.
Lynette was, for once, at a loss for words. No sarcastic comments, no tongue-in-cheek comebacks…she was completely caught off-guard. While Lynette was trying to absorb the words that just floated out of Bree’s mouth, Bree began to feel tense at Lynette’s lack of response. Bree slowly backed away from a stunned Lynette.
“Lynette? Please, say something” Bree said as tears were streaming down her cheeks.
Lynette hated to see Bree cry. She walked over to her redhead friend and wiped away her tears. Lynette couldn’t deny that she had always found Bree attractive and intriguing, but she never pursued those feelings. She certainly never expected Bree Hodge, an obsessive-compulsive, conservative Christian, to have or admit to an attraction to the opposite sex. But, standing in the kitchen in silence while staring into the emerald green eyes before her, Lynette couldn’t help but get lost in the emotions pouring out from them.
“Bree, I…I’m not sure what to say. Did you come to the hospital to tell me this last night?” Lynette asked to stall time.
“Ummhmm” Bree responded with a nod.
“So you’ve been hiding your feelings for a couple years now…Wow! We’ve been friends for over eight years and…and what? You just all of a sudden fell in love with me? It’s something that happened over time? How did this happen Bree?” Lynette wondered out loud.
Bree began to panic at Lynette’s series of questions. “Oh Lynette, I’m sorry. I never should’ve said anything. Please, just forgive me and let’s forget…” Bree started.
“Bree, I don’t think that’s possible. This isn’t something you can just sweep under the rug for God’s sake” Lynette jumped back.
Bree’s eyes grew wide as she could hear the frustration in Lynette’s voice. Lynette took notice of Bree’s firm posture and her flushed face. “I’m sorry. I’m not angry. I just don’t know what to say. I didn’t expect this. I never thought you would feel this way for me” Lynette said softly.
“I know. I understand and it’s alright” Bree responded.
“I need to go…and think. I’m not thinking too clearly right now and I just…just need to go home” Lynette said with a rushed voice. She turned to leave the kitchen and make her way to Bree’s front door.
Once Lynette was out of sight, Bree covered her mouth to hush her cries. She leaned back against the counter and slid down to the floor. Bree curled her legs up to her chest and pressed her face against her knees. She was so caught up in the idea of losing Lynette’s friendship and the blonde’s lack of response to her confession that she failed to notice footsteps approaching her.
Bree felt a warm hand touch her own and she brought her head up to look at the person standing above her. All Bree could do was cry when she saw the heavenly figure before her; she thought she was alone. The warmth of Lynette’s hand resonated through Bree’s body and calmed her cries. Normally Bree would be embarrassed by her tears, but their was a sense of familiarity and comfort in Lynette’s presence. “Lynette…” Bree began.
“Shhh…” Lynette said as she combed Bree’s hair from her face with her delicate fingers. Lynette moved from in front of Bree to take a seat beside her on the kitchen floor. She interlaced her fingers with Bree’s as they sat silently on the floor looking straight ahead. After a few moments of staring at their embracing hands, Lynette brought Bree’s hand to her mouth and gently planted a lingering kiss on it. Lynette’s brought Bree’s hand to her own cheek and closed her eyes at the softness of the redhead’s touch. Lynette had secretly yearned for that touch since the first day she met the recently married Bree Hodge.
Lynette felt a wide-range of emotions for Bree ranging not the least of which was love. It was no secret that the two women represented differing beliefs in politics and parenting, but they shared many common interests, mostly their hurried roles as mother and wife. This one bond initiated a deep friendship between the two even before Lynette gave birth to the twins. It was Bree to whom Lynette would go for maternal and parenting advice; Bree with whom she shared her mistakes during the early years of parenting and Bree to whom she cried when she was spiraling out of control on the boys’ ADD medication.
And despite Bree’s outwardly perfect image, Lynette was always perceptive towards Bree’s sensitive and gentle nature. Lynette understood Bree’s need to use perfection and order as a defense mechanism. Lynette also considered herself fortunate to be called upon when Bree needed consoling herself or someone to listen. Yes, the two women had been close for a long time. Throughout the years, Lynette quietly observed the sensuality and appeal of her redhead neighbor, but she never openly displayed her attraction to Bree. Never did Lynette conceive that Bree would be attracted to her; and, she had never prepared herself for a time when she would be confronted with Bree’s revelation of love and desire for her.
Lynette tried to walk away from Bree, but she couldn’t. She couldn’t walk out on her best friend, she couldn’t leave without explanation and, more importantly, she couldn’t deny her feelings. Lynette was torn between her feelings and her devotion to her family, but she was powerless when it came to ignoring Bree’s confession.
Sitting on the kitchen floor, Lynette and Bree stared deeply into each other’s eyes. Lynette could see the hurt and fear in Bree’s honest eyes; Bree could see the same in the blue eyes staring back at her. “I’m sorry Bree…sorry for trying to walk out earlier” Lynette.
“You have every right to want to get as far away from me as possible. I’ve hurt you with this awful truth and…” Bree responded.
“No…no, you haven’t hurt me. You just shocked the hell out of me…I didn’t exactly expect this outflow of emotions from you of all people. We both know you are a conservative!” Lynette said to lighten the tone.
With a smile on her face, Bree let out a small giggle. “Yes, well I have managed to shock us both. I never planned to come clean with you about my feelings until I almost lost you. While I waited for you to come out of the supermarket, all I could think about was never having told you how I feel about you” Bree said.
“Right, and I had that same sort of feeling as I was walking toward your front door…” Lynette began to explain before Bree interrupted.
“What do you mean?” Bree asked.
Lynette took both of Bree’s hands in hers and turned her body to face her neighbor. “I was terrified of walking out of here and damaging our friendship, scared of making you feel insecure and immoral for feeling this way, and most of all…mostly, I need to be honest with you as you have been with me” Lynette said.
“I deserve anything you are about to say to me” Bree said as he bowed her head.
“Yes, you do” Lynette responded as she lifted Bree’s chin with her finger.
Not knowing what to expect, Bree took a deep breath and waited for Lynette to speak. She was surprised at the blonde’s silence. Lynette slowly leaned into Bree, taking her face in her hands, and sought out her soft lips. Hovering over Bree’s lips, Lynette looked her neighbor in the eyes and whispered the words that would change their relationship forever, “I love you.” Immediately after Lynette muttered those three words, Bree pulled Lynette into a slow and passionate kiss. They were fully engaged in the exploration of each other’s mouths for several moments, but as the minutes passed their hearts began to race and their breathing intensified.
Drifting back to reality, Bree remembered their location and realized that anyone could walk in and catch them. Bree reluctantly pulled away from Lynette and tried to catch her breath. “Lynette, we can’t do this here...whatever this is” Bree said as she ran her along Lynette’s neck.
“Of course” Lynette agreed. Lynette stood up and extended her hands to assist Bree in standing. Before Bree could straighten her clothes, Lynette had her pinned against the counter, capturing the redhead’s lips between her own. “Lyn…Lynette…we…can’t… do…this…now” Bree mumbled between kisses. As the words were coming out of her mouth, Lynette moved her fingers under the hem of Bree’s skirt and began untucking Bree’s shirt and running her fingers along Bree’s naked waist.
Bree found herself forgetting, once again, why it was a bad idea to not just make love to her neighbor right then and there. Unable to fight temptation, Bree wrapped her arms around Lynette and pulled the blonde closer to her body. Running her arms up Lynette’s back, Bree undid Lynette’s hair from her ponytail as Lynette rolled her head back at the feel of Bree’s fingers running through her locks. “That feels nice” Lynette whispered as their lips collided once more. “You feel nice” Bree responded.
Bree ran her hands up Lynette’s body from her abdomen and slid her fingers beneath the baggy shirt she was wearing over a tank top. Bree bent forward to run her tongue down Lynette’s neck as she slid the shirt off the blonde’s body. Lynette’s fingers began to unbutton Bree’s blouse button by button. When the last button was undone, Bree turned around in Lynette’s arms. Lynette reached over Bree’s shoulders and pulled her shirt from her body as she kissed her way down the center of Bree’s back. After tossing the shirt aside, Lynette wrapped her hands around Bree’s waist and trickled her fingers down the redheads stomach causing Bree to experience her muscles flutter. As Lynette’s hands traveled further down her body, Bree’s breathing became more impatient. Bree enjoyed the soft wisp of Lynette’s breath on her earlobe and the feel of her teeth nibbling at her. Nobody, not even her current husband, could make her lost control under their touch; only Lynette could reign down such power and influence over her emotions. Bree felt safe in Lynette’s embrace; she could sense the love and adoration that was felt towards her.
Lynette’s fingers eventually landed on the waist of Bree’s skirt. As Bree turned her head to meet Lynette’s lips, Lynette began to unbutton and unzip the last significant piece of clothing on the redhead’s body. Next, Bree felt warm fingers edging their way beneath the fabric of her underpants. Bree wanted to tell Lynette to keep going, but all she could mutter was a breathless “Yes.” That was plenty incentive for Lynette.
Just as Lynette was reaching her destination, both women halted their movements. “Oh God, was that a car door?” Bree said.
“Damn. Who could it be?” Lynette answered.
“I don’t know…help me get dressed” Bree replied as she and Lynette scurried about to assemble Bree back to perfection. Just as Lynette was slipping on her shirt and fixing her hair, they heard the front door slam.
“Bree, I’m home” Orson yelled.
“In the kitchen. What are you doing home this early?” Bree shouted.
As Orson appeared in the kitchen, he was surprised to find Lynette sitting on the counter. “Oh, hi Lynette. I didn’t know anyone was here with Bree” Orson said.
“Yes, she came over to visit for a bit” Bree replied.
“Yep and I really need to get back home and finish the laundry” Lynette stated.
“Well, I’ll see you out” Bree offered as she motioned Lynette to follow.
Reaching the door, the women stared at each other with elevated desire. “I know this is bad timing, but I need you so bad right now” Lynette said.
Bree blushed at Lynette’s blunt remark. “I know…me too. This will have to wait though, since Orson’s around. I know he’ll want us to spend every second together since we have the house to ourselves” Bree stated.
“Hmmm…yeah probably. Okay, we’ll just have to postpone…but don’t lose the urge!” Lynette added and ran her hand along Bree’s cheek. With that lasting impression, Lynette turned and walked away….
