Title: Carpe Diem (set after Bang!)
Part I
Bree ceased to breathe while watching the hostage survivors exit the market on her television screen. She was happy to see Julie and Susan reunite, but where was Lynette? Thoughts of guilt and devastation ran through her mind and heart. Where was the blonde neighbor she had grown to love over the past eight years? Her three young boys are waiting for their mother to return home to them. “She can’t leave us” Bree thought to herself. Her eyes were wide with anticipation. Her face was turning red with the lack of oxygen in her lungs. Waiting, waiting, waiting….
Out rolls a stretcher…it’s Lynette. Bree feels the oxygen begin to flow through her veins and the pressure on her heart begin to ease. She’s conscious; she’s alive. “Oh, thank you God. Thank you for saving her!” Bree thinks. Bree also notices that Tom rushes by Lynette’s side and takes her hand as he leans in to kiss his wife. Bree’s relief is replaced by jealousy and desire. Everyone from the neighborhood is sighing and jumping around with relief, but Bree looks past all that and is only focused on the picture of Lynette on her television. “I have to see her. See for myself that she’s alright.” Bree thinks again to herself.
After a few hours, Bree has finished cleaning up the house after the guests had left and the dinner dishes were washed. After sending the boys to the living room to play games, Bree hears the doorbell ring. She answers the door and finds Tom to be on the other side.
“My God, Tom. I didn’t expect you until later. Lynette, how is she? Is she alright? Come in, please.” Bree said in a panicked tone.
“She’s fine Bree. Listen, we aren’t ready to tell the boys yet. Can I call you in the morning with details? Basically, she was shot in the shoulder so there’s no long-term physical damage. She was pretty out of it once we got her up to the hospital room. They had her on a morphine drip and she has very low tolerance for pain meds. Listen , Bree thanks for watching the boys. I hope they weren’t too much trouble!” Tom said.
“No, they were well-behaved. Tom, if you need anything please let me know.” Bree said as she leaned in to hug Tom.
Soon after Tom left, Bree decided to visit Lynette at the hospital. Telling Orson she’d be home in a couple hours, she left for the hospital. On the drive over, memories of Lynette rushed through Bree’s mind. She thought about the first time they met and how Lynette was panicking about being pregnant with twins. She remembered the times she and Lynette took the kids to the park. She also recalled Lynette’s confrontation of her alcohol abuse. Tears were streaming down Bree’s cheeks by the time she arrived at the hospital.
“She’s the best friend I’ve ever had and I love her. I just can’t keep this hidden any longer not when I could lose her so instantly” Bree thought. Bree exited her car and made her way to Lynette’s room.
When she arrived, Bree was taken away by the beautiful blonde lying in the hospital bed. She was sleeping so peacefully. Bree took the chair next to the window and moved it closer to Lynette’s bed. She sat for awhile and watched as Lynette slumbered silently. Bree ran her fingers through the blonde’s golden locks and held one of her hands in her own.
As Lynette slept, she dreamed of her last encounter with Mary Alice. She felt a wave of relief once she spoke with Mary Alice and was told by her departed neighbor to enjoy the day and life in general. After her dream, she felt herself drift in between consciousness and unconsciousness. She could feel the presence of someone else. She felt fingers running through her hair and a hand caressing hers. Lynette turned her head over to the side of the bed where Bree was sitting.
When Lynette opened her eyes, she saw Bree smiling back at her. “Bree? Hi” Lynette said softly. Lynette grabbed Bree’s hand and held it firmly. “I’m a little out of it. How long have you been here?” Lynette asked.
“Not too long. You were out cold, that’s good. Are you in a lot of pain, honey?” Bree asked.
“No, not with the meds they’re giving me” Lynette said with a half smile.
“Good. Wow, you look so amazing!” Bree said as tears began streaming down her cheeks again. She was so embarrassed and tried to wipe them away before the blonde could notice. She wasn’t quick enough.
“Hey, Bree, why are you crying?” Lynette said with concern. “You can tell me.”
Bree wiped away her tears and nodded her head. She moved from her chair to sit on the side of Lynette’s bed. Holding Lynette’s hand in her own, she stared into the blonde’s deep blue eyes. “Lynette, you could’ve died today!” Bree said
Lynette let out a deep sigh, “Yes, but I’m still here.”
Bree ran her hand across Lynette’s cheek. “Yes, you are. Thank God for that.”
“This doesn’t explain away your tears Bree. Is something wrong?” Lynette inquired.
Bree took a deep breath before speaking. She wanted to find just the right words. “Lynette, we’ve been friends for over 8 years now. Over the course of that time, I’ve grown to love you more and more”
“Aaawww…and I love you Bree” Lynette said as she wiped Bree’s left cheek.
“That’s not all, Lynette. I’ve been hiding something from you for a couple years and I never planned on telling you. Watching the hostage situation on television today and not knowing whether I’d ever see you again convinced me to open up to you and tell you the truth.” Bree said
“Okay, honey. You are really starting to frighten me. This isn’t a bad secret is it? I don’t know if I can handle anymore bad news today!” Lynette kidded.
“Well, it’s not bad news, but I’m not really sure how you’re going to take it. Look, maybe I should just wait until you are feeling better” Bree said as she began to let loose of Lynette’s hand.
“No, you can’t do that to me. I’m fine, Bree. Just tell me, please. You can tell me” Lynette said as her speech began to slur and her voice quieted. Bree looked away for a moment to gain her composure, and when she looked back Lynette had fallen back to sleep.
Bree smiled at the blonde’s fragility at that moment. Although she wanted to shout her love from the rooftops, she knew Lynette needed her rest. “I love you Lynette” Bree whispered as she bent down to kiss the blonde’s forehead. Bree moved back to the chair and watched Lynette sleep for a bit longer before returning home to her husband. Bree tossed and turned all night; she was aching to tell Lynette the truth.
The next day, Bree returned to her daily routine while Orson was at work and the kids were at school. Tom called her and the other neighbors to let them know he would be bringing Lynette home that evening before dinner, to which they were invited. Bree waited anxiously all day to see Lynette. When the time came, she met Gabby and Susan at Lynette’s and greeted Lynette and Tom when they came home.
When Lynette stepped out of the car, Bree’s breath was taken away. “She’s an angel! I’ve never seen her look more beautiful” Bree thought to herself. Careful not to become too emotional, Bree kept her distance from Lynette during dinner. Bree knew that if she were to be alone with Lynette, she would let the truth spill out of her and she just didn’t think now was the time to throw this at Lynette. With that thought in mind, Bree excused herself from the dinner early. Lynette was disappointed that Bree didn’t stay longer; she could tell that something was wrong with Bree.
Lynette walked Bree to the door. “Bree, thank you for taking care of the boys and for visiting me last night” Lynette said as she planted a kiss on Bree’s cheek.
“I’m just happy you are home. I’m here if you need anything, honey” Bree said before turning to leave. Lynette watched as Bree crossed the street back to her house. “Something is very off with Bree, she’s hiding something from me” Lynette thought to herself.
After Gabby, Susan, and McCluskey left, Tom took the kids upstairs to get them ready for bed. Lynette was still preoccupied with Bree and her abnormal behavior earlier. Bree had still not explained why she was crying last night by Lynette’s bedside. Lynette was really worried about her best friend. She looked over at Bree’s and saw that Orson’s car was not there nor was Andrew’s. Since Bree was alone, Lynette decided it would be a perfect time for her to talk to Bree.
“Tom, I’m going over to visit Bree. I will be back later. Call my cell if you need anything” Lynette yelled upstairs.
“Okay, honey. See you later” Tom yelled back.
Lynette grabbed her cell phone and made her way across the street to Bree’s. After knocking twice, Bree came to the door. “Hi Bree!” Lynette said. Bree looked surprised to see Lynette standing on her doorstep. “Lynette? What are you doing here? You should be resting, honey” Bree responded.
“Can I come in?” Lynette asked.
“Of course, come on in” Bree said as she motioned Lynette to come inside.
