Passed away on January 27th after being involved in a head-on collision. His name was Ron Lavoie, also known on the geocaching forums as "Landrocket" someone who was famous for being the first-to-find on hundreds of caches because he would get up and go find a cache in the wee hours the day after it was posted.
We spoke some online and he gave me lots of tips, kudos and encouragement. It had seemed to me that he was a genuinely kind, thoughtful, spiritual, great man.
I was impressed with his good humored nature, his resilience - he was 54 years old yet was up there finding some of the most difficult caches, in tough terrain, in the dark besides. He fought off obesity by taking the bull by the horns and finding a way to lose weight that he thoroughly enjoyed.
I got one of his trademark cars out of a cache. I am glad I followed my instincts and took it with me. I will treasure it always.
I plan on placing a memorial cache up on Cadillac Mountain in the springtime as it is the first place that the rays of the rising sun reach the Western Hemisphere. That, I think, is ever so appropriate.
We will miss you Landrocket.
