new york, new york

One thing that permanently marks me as not a "real" New Yorker or a "real" sports fan (neither of which I would ever profess to be) is my inability to adopt the grammar. In the greater NY area, names of sports teams which are plural (e.g. Mets, Knicks) must be conjugated in their adjectival form to match the plurality of the noun they modify. Thus, "We have tickets to see the Knicks," but "Are you a Knick fan?" or "I just got a new Met hat!"

I find this charming but I can't bring myself to do it, leaving me permanently excluded from the realm of people capable of discussing these things comfortably as small-talk. It's hard to be a man sometimes.
