I guess I'll reply to this because I just watched this video twice (on your post and on Christoph's). Yucky.
First off, I think PETA's ideas for spreading their message perpetuates the social stigma associated with the group. (I'm sure we've all seen PETA on South Park and giggled.) And honestly, who ever decided that seeing a tanned young girl with a pornstar crotch was going to make me revel in my natural animal roots and identify myself with a wrapped piece of chicken is just silly, but whatever... I don't work in advertising. Or tanning.... or porn.
But, I guess the point is to get attention and I'm sure this will. Personally, watching that video of a pig being dragged by its leg on a blood soaked floor is enough for me to swear off bacon for the rest of my life. Sure, I'd have to think about that image every time I went to breakfast, but I could do it. I know I'm not going to save the pig, but it bothers me that much and more importantly, I can live without it. But, I don't think everyone in the world would be able to
( ... )
I think it's upsetting that getting naked is what it takes to draw people's attention to certain issues (upsetting and seeeexy). You can even see the girl laugh at how ridiculous it is at one point. She did get nice and dolled up for it, wore nice underwear, and they edited some nice camera shots and whatnot, so it was pretty thought out.
I did watch it, so it worked, although I did close the window once the girl was gone.
I'm still gonna eat meat. I don't eat pig product, but only because I don't like the way it tastes (aside from bacon, which I only eat on bacon, egg, and cheeses). It'll take more than a girl getting naked and some videos of animal abuse to change that. It's not like I'm not sympathetic, but honestly, what am I supposed to do about it? The most realistic thing for me to do would be to become Kosher, where all the animals are killed humanely and without pain. I'm still eating them though, but that's what humans do, like a lot of other animals.
I share a lot of sentiments that you do...but instead of making me mad at PETA, I generally feel despair at the state of the industry and how there seems to be nothing we can really do. Titties notwithstanding. OH and, I still eat meat.
it's impossible to make anyone change their mind or opinions on anything. The person has to be willing to change or want to change for anything to change at all. The problem isn't how they protest, where, or to who, but that anyone that may care is turned off by the way it's being presented to them.
So it's either do something outlandish in order to gain hits on a website or actually go out and make people understand what you're actually protesting. One is near impossible and the other works, but not in anyway that helps the cause.
