He stepped out onto the porch, his head angling up towards the increased cloud cover as a steady rain began to fall. Extending out a hand, he placed it on the railing, enthralled eyes watching closely as the wood started to disintegrate beneath his fingers.

The wood crackled and singed as it fell in an acidic mound on the concrete steps. He smiled, pulling his hand back to examine his open palm, rolling it into a fist a couple times before stepping into the light sheets of rain.

A heavier rain slicked his dark hair to his forehead as he maneuvered around the wet grass, his black Converse shoes drenched through when he slipped into a puddle near the sidewalk. “Damnit.” He muttered under his breath, ignoring the wet cold that tinged his skin as he climbed into the run-down car he’d stolen a couple hours earlier.

He jammed his hand into the pocket of his jacket, fishing out a crumpled sheet of paper and smoothing it out against the dashboard. The glove compartment opened with a loud creak, his fingers riffling through the contents until he found a pen and scratched out the name of his last victim.

Jason Bingham. Forks, Washington

Suresh was right; even in the smallest towns, there lay extraordinary gifts. He wouldn’t have come to Forks if the powers sheltered were any less than the active ability he now possessed.

His fingertips trailed across the creased paper, dampened ink smearing slightly at his next destination. Smoothing back his matted hair, he slid the key into the ignition, the resulting effort sending a sputtering choke from the engine.

He threw his fists against the steering wheel in frustration, his focus compromised as the plastic began to bubble, concentrated acid dripping from his skin cells. The coagulation of the soft plastic wrangled his thoughts and he opened his eyes, pulling his hands away from the wheel.

A low growl and heavy sigh echoed in the small cabin as he pushed open the door and exited the car into the pouring rain. Just as the door slammed shut, his enhanced hearing picked up a chatter of teenagers and a drone-like bell, his head snapping towards the open road.

There was a school nearby. No more than a quarter mile up the road. He remembered it vaguely while passing through, but his attention was more keen on something else than a brick building full of immature humans.

”Alice, what did you see?” a female voice was frantic, the tone reverberating off his eardrums as another voice entered, much softer and almost monotone. ”They’ve disappeared… I think they’ve crossed over the boundaries to the wolves. I won’t be able to see anything else until they’ve made a decision.

The first voice held little interest to him as he swiped matted locks out of his eyes and stared off into the dense mesh of trees. It was only until the second voice had reached its end did his mind click. He narrowed his eyes, pulling his gaze from the forest as he stepped down from the curb and headed south.

Trekking through thin puddles on the uneven pavement, he attuned his ears to the conversation, their voices gaining volume the closer he got. A third voice had entered the conversation. This time a male. He spoke calmly, the tone so soft that even he had to strain his hearing to pick it up.

Their words made little sense to him but he continued to eavesdrop, the pounding rain finally letting up as he rounded the corner into the medium sized parking lot of Forks High School.

He spotted the trio a few yards away, clustered around a silver Volvo as he stepped forward and caught the male stiffen. The frantic female voice returned and he pinpointed it to the brunette, who looked anxiously at him, ”Edward, what is it?” He could hear the pained voice answer; his tone sounding like it was being strained through his clenched teeth, ”Blood.”

”I’m not bleeding…” the girl said, her eyes scanning her limbs just in case, ”I thought you got over the smell.” He turned his head slightly towards the mass of trees, his clenched teeth never relaxing, ”Not yours…”

Continuing his pace forward, Sylar approached the three as he carefully knit up a façade. The brunette was the first to notice him, her anxious eyes turning curious as she examined his rain-drenched appearance. She stepped away from the car, ignoring the protective arm that shot up towards her as she let a small smile grace her face, “Are you alright?”

He laughed inwardly, his dark eyes noticing the sharp tilt of the young man’s head as he contorted his face into confusion and replied, “I’m having a bit of car trouble. Is there a mechanic in town?”

This time the pixie sized girl spoke, her unusual coloured eyes friendly, “There’s one but he charges exorbitant prices for little effort.”

“So you’re saying I’m stuck?” he teased, his lips widening into a grin and the girl returned the smile, an angelic giggle following, “Actually,” she began, topaz eyes drifting towards the rigid form of the male, “Edward’s pretty good with cars, I’m sure he could figure out what’s going on.”

He turned his head towards Edward, his chestnut eyes locking on a hollow pair of black, until the young man relaxed and nodded slightly. Stepping forward, he passed the black haired girl; stopping momentarily as the girl whispered something inaudible, but his hearing picked it up clearly. Edward nodded once more and walked towards him, his muscles still visibly tense.

His gaze was fixed on the small girl, his attention pulled back when he noticed Edward approach him. He turned around, leading the bronze haired boy out of the school’s parking lot and down the street towards the heavy forest.

“Who’s Carlisle?” Sylar asked, maneuvering around a large puddle on the sidewalk as he kept in step with the young man. Edward hesitated slightly at the mention of Carlisle’s name but he answered, his jaw clenched again, “He’s my father.”

He nodded, sliding both hands into the pocket of his jacket, “Why would that girl be concerned about you breaking his rules?” Sylar laughed, glancing over to Edward and meeting another hard stare of bottomless black orbs, “Are you not allowed to talk to strangers?”

Sylar saw his expression change, his hard gaze still unwavering but his jaw unclenched and he stopped short, “Actually, Carlisle praises us for aiding the helpless.” His voice darkened, “…but you’re no where near helpless.”

The façade quivered, his hands rolling into fists against the fabric of his pockets, “What are you talking about?” he asked and he saw Edward kept his defiant stance against the backdrop of drab greenery.

“Don’t think I don’t know who you are.” he replied and Sylar flinched slightly at the words, his jaw setting awkwardly as he dropped the cover and mocked, “Oh, and what’s that?”

Edward smiled, his black eyes piercing, “It’s all in your thoughts.”

He watched as a dark eyebrow lifted curiously and the man’s head tilted to the side, his lips holding in a laugh. “You’re a mind-reader, aren’t you?” he said, straightening up as his amused outburst kept the corner of his lip tugged upwards. Edward stayed rigid in place, his pale lips drawn in a straight line

“You know, I was going to start with that friend of yours… the one who could “see” things…” he laughed, eyes narrowing as a sneer entered his features, “but while I was following your conversation, it occurred to me that I already possess that certain ability.”

Sylar tilted his head, “…but mind-reading, I’ve never been able to acquire.” He glanced at Edward and saw his eyes still frozen on his as he decided to play a bit with his story. “Sure, I’ve had opportunities…” he pulled a hand out from his pocket and made a grasping gesture with his palm, “but they’ve always seemed to slip from my grasp.”

“… and you won’t be making that same mistake today.” Edward voiced, finishing Sylar’s toying rant as he watched his lips part into a devious smirk, “You know me too well.”

The hand resting at his side lifted up, catching Edward off guard as he flew back and smashed into the thick trunk of a pine tree. The tree snapped effortlessly as if it was a paper thin branch and when he saw Edward recover too quickly, he took an extra precaution and seized him in a vice-like hold.

Edward snarled against the invisible grip, his lips curling back to bare sharp white teeth as he watched the taller man approach him. The branches and foliage crumpled beneath his feet as he reached the man held still, leaning towards him as he watched his black eyes blaze in a unknown rage.

The telekinetic hold broke against the vampire’s rock hard limbs, his body lurching forward to tackle Sylar to the drenched forest floor, ice cold lips hovering centimeters from his strained neck. He struggled, managing to move his hands to Edward’s chest, his palms laying flat against the stone skin.

A bright orange surrounded them, radioactive heat singeing his shirt and exposing his palms to the frozen expanse of his skin. He jerked back, his skull cracking against the ground as Edward sensed the action as a struggle, sending venom coated teeth into his throat.

Sylar yelled out, thrashing his palms upwards into Edward’s chest and he pulled back, a dark topaz seeping into his eyes as he looked at him stiffly. Blood speckled his bottom lip, his eyes still holding a fury beneath them as dark eyes locked on them and the man beneath him gasped in shock, “What the hell are you?!” he strained, the action of Edward licking the blood from his lip sending a fleet of horror to his features and he sent a wave of cryokinesis to his exposed chest.

Edward kept his stance, the defensive maneuver phasing him slightly to pull back an inch, but only on his terms. The hand sparked again in a brilliant blue light, skin touching skin as Sylar asked exasperated, “You can’t feel that?!”

A simple shake of his head answered his question as he leaned closer to his face, his red stained lips looking deeply contrasted against the white tint of his skin, “You should be in agonizing pain right now.”

“Sorry to disappoint.” He managed to choke out through clenched teeth, the puncture marks on his neck just barely sending a slight searing sensation through the nerves. The burning intensified and he bit down on his lip, teeth tearing the soft flesh and causing blood to bubble from the fresh wound.

Edward faltered, his golden eyes locked on the inviting red substance coating the man’s lower lip as he dove forward. His mouth closed around his bottom lip, lapping up the available blood as he sucked greedily on the wound to elicit more. A pained gasp brushed past his cheek and the quest for nourishment made an unexpected turn as he captured his lips in his own. The action startled both, but neither backed down as persistent tongues picked up faint traces of iron on both lips. Sylar’s palms fell away from Edward’s chest while alabaster hands crept to either side of the taller man’s head.

”You can’t disappoint Carlisle.” an angelic voice echoed in his head and he broke the kiss, pulling back just enough for Sylar to slam both palms against his chest and send him back into the pile of damp pine needles.

The amount of exertion he used to push the vampire off of him caused his nerves to flare and a brutal scream tore from his lungs. His vision went hazy and his lost his balance, falling back to the ground as Edward pulled himself up and stared at the long limbs contorting in pain. He took a step towards him.

“You can’t.” A voice broke in, Edward’s head snapping to the side to see Alice standing a few feet away, her eyes burning in resolve. Edward looked back at the man; his teeth clenched again, “He’s too dangerous…”

“If he becomes a problem, we can always take care of him later.” She replied, her voice still soft and clear, as she looked down at Sylar, “Perhaps the agony will teach him a lesson.”

Edward looked off into the forest, trying to tune out the excruciating screams that reverberated off of his eardrums until he nodded once, turning his attention back on the girl. Alice smiled, “We should go before someone hears him.”

He stalked forward, following the small woman as they walked up the street, the sounds of his screams drowning out as they approached the high school. Edward sighed, pulling his jacket together to zip it up as he looked at Alice warily, “He’s going to be dangerous…”

Alice kept her face forward, her eyes glued ahead of her as she answered bluntly, “Very.”
