Going from this
to this

Note - This tutorial may work better with lighter toned pictures.

So we're working with this base.

1. Soften the skin, avoiding the nose, facial hair and lips. Then sharpen.

2. Above the base layer add this texture by colortone and set the blending mode to Multiply.

3. Above that layer add this texture also by colortone and set the blending mode on Color Burn.

4. Duplicate the base and bring it to the very top. Then change the blending mode to Hard Light.

5. Go back to the base and select part of the picture.

6. Copy and paste it into a new layer (ctrl+c, ctrl+v) and desaturate (shift+ctrl+u). Then move it off to the left.

7. Make a new layer (shift+ctrl+n) above the black and white photo. Then apply this brush
in white in a large enough size to fit over the black and white photo.

8. To create the drop shadow, duplicate the white brush layer and invert it (ctrl+i). Nudge it a bit below where the white brush ends. Then go to Filter >> Blur >> Gaussian Blur and put it at 2 px. Move that layer below the white brush layer and erase any bits that cover the photo. It ends up looking like this:

9. Make another new layer (shift+ctrl+n) above the other layers. Apply this text brush by gender and position it over the white area above the black and white photo.

And that's it.

Here's my layers to see how it turned out.

Feel free to ask any questions. :)
