The Misadventures of Tom Lawyer, by Andrew Jones
In the year 1990, Mrs. Lawyer gave birth to a baby boy and named him Tom. The Lawyer family had always been entirely comprised of lawyers, and Mr. and Mrs. Lawyer expected no different of their son Tom.
At the age of five, Tom put on his custom tailored suit and brought a briefcase to kindergarten. On the first day of class, he impressed his colleagues with his mastery over The Hungry Hungry Caterpillar. By the end of the week, Tom Lawyer demonstrated that his recitation of Green Eggs and Ham surpassed that of his instructor, and so his kindergarten teacher resigned.
By the time Tom Lawyer reached 3rd grade, his success seemed indubitable. However, one day during snack time, while munching on his baby carrots, Tom pondered about his future. Nancy, Tom's best friend, found Tom to be unusually quiet.
"Whatcha thinking about?"
Tom looked at Nancy in the eye and said, "I do not wish to be a lawyer." He paused dramatically.
Nancy didn't care. "Can I have a baby carrot?"
Tom ignored her and continued. "I know my parents would never accept a Lawyer becoming anything other than a lawyer, but I believe if I continue this path which my mother and father have paved for me, I will not find happiness for myself. I want to be in control of my destiny."
Although Tom's entire speech was three sentences long, Nancy fell asleep upon hearing it. Tom looked at his best friend with loving eyes and murmured, "One day, I will marry you. That is where I will find my happiness."
Then Tom got hit by a car.
