Jack Bauer Can Blow Me

I'm not planning on getting any sleep today, simply because I've got major revisions to make to my thesis and then have a 162 (Assessment) class at 9am later. Then I shall be attending the David Sedaris book signing at Powerbooks Greenbelt, which just happens to be the favored watering hole of the GIGO crew.

I first got acquainted with Sedaris' work when my sister --- who has moved to New York for a theater career and hosted Cinema AZN --- made me read "Cyclops" from Naked drawing comparisons between our own father and the hyperparanoiac described within. I later acquired Me Talk Pretty One Day from historicaltheft, who has always had a superior gift-sense that puts Karl Marx Santa Claus to shame.

So for the past week, I've been kind of annoyed that I've been too busy everyday to re-read his work, mostly because I want to come up with a list of really mean or heartless things to say to him that I probably won't (because deep inside, I am an innocent soul who can do no wrong and loves the world*), not unlike a similar list I wrote for Neil Gaiman last year.

But what I really said to Gaiman was, "You know, my girlfriend wanted me to mention that everytime she sees one of your novels, she picks them up and rubs your photographed face across her breasts. And she says she means that in the most non-sexual way possible." To which he replied, "Well, tell her I find that wonderful. In the most non-sexual way possible, of course."

But I digress. At least I can take some small measure of pride from the fact that I will have the most battered-looking set of Sedaris books to be signed tomorrow as I have treated them like recycled condoms. I think the state which Me Talk Pretty One Day is most egregious. It's a four year old copy that has ripened into a brownish state that is reminiscent of a four-generations old collection of Nancy Drew novels.

So if any of you all are going to be at Greenbelt tomorrow, please don't hesitate to say hi to me --- you know, 'meatspace shout-out'! --- so you can all be tremendously disappointed to see what I am like in real life.

*Yes, I love the world. I love it like THAT. And it likes it.
