Good evening! I was unaware that this community existed until I saw it featured on the homepage, and I'm glad I took a look. I was stationed in Sasebo from July 2003 to December 2005 - I had so much fun there. I've been back in the States and find myself wishing almost daily that I could return to Japan at one point. I miss being able to hop on a train and visit new cities, I miss how quiet a town Sasebo was (for the most part), I miss the food, and I miss the people. It's good to see a community like this exists!
While I did have commissary access and was able to still get a lot of American foods, brands were quite limited and quantities were even more limited. Therefore, here's my top ten list of foods/drinks I missed in Japan:
(1) Blue Bell Ice Cream (it's a Southern thing)
(2) Normal milk (we either had the Hokkaido milk, which I didn't like, or milk from the States that was radiated and had a three-month shelf life - ew!)
(3) Real Mexican food
(4) Burger King!
(5) Milkshakes
(6) Cheesecake
(7) Diet Dr Pepper
(8) Watermelon (too expensive)
(9) Tater tots
(10) Deep dish pizza
