Kumamotooo!

Hi all! So, it turns out that from April 2 I'll be living in Kumamoto for a year to do an exchange program at Kumamoto Gakuen University. Admittedly it wasn't even on my list of preferences when I applied for exchange at my local university, although through a series of administrative stuff-ups (grr) it turns out this was the only one I could go to. Not that I'm complaining, mind you! I've previously lived in Shikoku so I quite enjoy the lifestyle of smaller cities and enjoy having mountains nearby, but I haven't found a lot lot of information on people's experiences of Kumamoto or studying at KGU. Just wondering if there's anyone here who would like to share any thoughts about living/studying/travelling/etc in Kumamoto...? :)
Anyway, as much as I like the towns and smaller cities of Japan, the only trade-off for me is trying to find live gigs and people who share similar music tastes. This is a long shot, but if anyone can recommend bands or venues anywhere in Kyushu to do with underground metal/noise/grind/industrial/neofolk/etc it'd be mucho appreciated. :D
