Hello. Person who I am sharing the net with will be moving soon and taking the new with them. I was curious to know how Yahoo! BB is as an Internet provider. I'd be paying for it by myself, so something not too expensive would be nice ( Read more... )

When I was attending Daitou 3 years ago I stayed in a dorm in Saitama and a friend who had been there for a while had Yahoo BB installed in his room. He let everyone leech off it for a while, but after a couple months the ISP sent him a fine of 40,000 yen because it apparently caught someone searching for porn over his IP (which naturally is illegal in Japan, though it doesn't seem that the authorities were fining him, just the ISP).

State censorship issues aside, it was really reliable on the main, and cost about 3,000 yen a month, as I recall.

you're not allowed to search for porn on the net in Japan?

Guess not. The guy showed me the paper issuing the fine.

Guess it explains part of the reason why I've seen Japanese men jump all over uncensored porn like the fat boy from Willy Wonka would a chocolate bar. hehehe...

This post just raised an internet question for me...
Back in January I know I signed a contract with OCN but I dont know how long it was for since it was all in Japanese, so does anyone know if the contract is for a set time and what happenes if you cancel it. Also I may be moving (within Tokyo to a different ward) in a few months so I guess I have to cancel my internet right? So do I take my modem or anything to my new place or do I just have to start everything again, sign a new contract, etc.

Go and look at www.bbapply.com the site of a helpful English-speaking agent who will help facilitate your application for YahooBB at no additional cost to you.

I got my YahooBB account through them four years ago, have had no problems moving house since and still go back to the support forums for occasional advice.

As for YahooBB as an ISP, I have had no major problems - and particularly nice is that my dynamic IP address is pretty much static.

Thank you for the webpage. I'm a bit confused on the whole with NTT and without NTT. Do you know which is better?

If you already have an NTT phone line then you want "with NTT", and if you don't already have a phone line I think you can go "without NTT".

Well, I don't have a phone line in my apartment, that I know of, so I guess without NTT is good.

The connection is ok, but I find the service is shocking. When I signed up, it came with 3 free months. But due to all sorts of problems on their end, not mine, it took three months for them to have my net properly hooked up. And then they had the never to say that was my free 3 months used up. They also sent me the wrong modem and wouldn't replace it.

I wouldn't use their service again.

Do you have any other recommendations for Internet providers? I wouldn't mind looking around.

I just cancelled my Yahoo BB after having it for three years plus. They were useless, no USELESS. I moved and tried to get it changed to my new address and it was just complete nonsense. I may even write a letter to Softbank and tell them how useless they were and rude to us--not that letters do any good here anyway--but a way to vent my frusterations.

Other then trying to change address, was it easy to use? I just need something for the next 6 months.
