A very very late addition

('cause I haven't been on LJ much lately)

Where are you?
Dublin, Ireland

Why there?
I've been fascinated by Irish history and politics since high school, and made many visits over. Finally a friend here convinced me to try my luck with this Celtic Tiger thing and see if I could get a work permit. Amazingly enough, I did.

Where are you from?
Born and raised in Maryland, USA, though I'd been in San Francisco for several years before moving here.

Do you speak the language?
Well, everyone here speaks English. I have studied Irish for some time though (even before I moved here) - mainly out of books, so I can't really speak it, but I can read and write OK.

Who are you with?
Just myself. I was initially living with the friends who convinced me to stay, but they moved to Belfast a couple years ago. I have a couple friends who I know from San Francisco (though one is a native Dubliner) living here, although I'm not really really close to either of them - my best friends are people I've met since I've moved here.

The best and worst part about it?
The best is that I'm in Ireland. I'm living my dream, and even though I complain about it a lot I really would not want to live anywhere else.

Also, being that I am (and have been for years) a fanatical Celtic FC supporter, I can actually go to the games now instead of having to get up at ungodly hours of the morning to watch a piss-poor satellite transmission in some stinky pub.

And the proximity to so many other countries is nice too, although it's neither as easy nor as affordable to get to those countries as I would hope.

The worst is that I'm here on a work permit (I've already bitched about that in a number of places in this journal :)). I also miss (good) Mexican and (any!) Ethiopian food, my family and friends, and sometimes I find the people here incredibly backward on certain social issues - it's hard to get used to after years of living in San Francisco.
